More than 500 students and teachers were evacuated from a university in Melbourne, Australia, as a result of a smell initially suspected to be gas.

But it turned out the "gas" that students smelt at a Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology library was a rotting durian found in a cupboard.

    I'll file this one away for something to give my colleagues after I move on. Who doesn't enjoy finding a durian that's been hidden in a cabinet for a month? Actually, most people haven't had the opportunity to decide if they enjoy it; that experience will be my gift.

    See if you can also give a can of fermented herring, surströmming, it's easier to track down for purchase than Icelandic fermented shark and nastier. Most do not know to open it under water and the pressure causes the liquid to spray out. The smell will persist even after washing. Like durians that is something either people like or dislike, but I think unlike the durian it is something you have to grow up on to find palatable. Warning though, if not kept refrigerated it really will spoil and make the smell far, far worse.
