Meet Tarek Loubani, the Canadian Doctor Shot by Israeli Forces Monday While Treating Gaza's Wounded (Transcript)

As Palestinians vow to continue protesting against the Israeli occupation of Gaza, we speak to a Canadian doctor who was shot by Israeli forces in both legs Monday [May 14] while he was helping injured Palestinians. Israeli forces shot dead at least 61 unarmed Palestinian protesters taking part in the Great March of Return Monday, including one doctor. Canada, Britain, Germany, Ireland, and Belgium have called for an investigation into the killings. The United Nations Human Rights Council has announced that it will hold a special session Friday to discuss escalating violence in Gaza. We speak with Dr. Tarek Loubani, an emergency room medical doctor, one of 19 medical personnel shot in Gaza on Monday.

Pacifica Radio KPFK has a partial audio file, available till mid-July, ~7MB for the story. (KPFK is in fund drive mode.)
Gaza coverage begins at 13:25. The doctor's story is from 15:15 - 31:30.
He notes that the doctor who treated him was subsequently shot, resulting in his death--this, while he was wearing high-visibility clothing to denote his first-responder status.

Not soldiers? WTF? They are constantly trying to shoot rockets into Israel. Digging tunnels into Israel. Any kind of attack they can dream up, they engage in. But, not soldiers. Alright.

Alright, I suppose it depends on how you define soldier -- some people would say a priest is a "soldier of God", which does meet one of the definitions in my dictionary, so in that sense I suppose you could call them soldiers. And you could call every prisoner who's ever tried to break out a soldier too. And if you're taking that broad of a definition, then yes, the rebels of Gaza are soldiers too. But they certainly are not soldiers in the same sense as US Marines or IDF troops.

Did you have an objection to what I wrote, or do you prefer to discuss some tangential theory that there are no combatants in Gaza?

Eh, my tangential theory about them not being soldiers is far more relevant than your tangential theory that it's all because they're sworn to the wrong mythical sky-beast. If you've got an argument that's actually based in reality, I might be willing to discuss that...

As for their "incompetent leaders", there are battles that cannot be won no matter who is leading it. Seems to me like their only hope is outside rescue, and the only way to get that is to make noise and be noticed. Sitting around silently waiting to die certainly isn't going to help them any. So what would you propose they do, since you're apparently such a military genius?

Battles that can't be won. Lemme think about that. Can we ask Mahatma? You know, Mahatma, that strange looking old Indian bastard who basically ran the British Empire out of India.

Of course, if you want to object that "Arabs don't have anyone as smart as Ghandi!", I'll accept your concession of this "debate".

The best strategy and/or tactic the Pals have ever come up with, are those videos of dead children carried through the streets - poor little victims of Israeli aggression. But, all too often, they forgot to turn the cameras off when the child was informed that he could get off his stretcher, and go play. That stupid stuff wears thin, pretty quickly.

The British needed the Indian people though. They needed them to work the mines and the refineries and the textile mills, in order to extract resources to be sent back to the Empire. If the Indian people decided to peacefully sit down and accept death rather than working for the occupying army, then that territory was worse than useless to the British -- they'd get no labor, no resources, and would have to spend a ton of both to keep the territory under their control.

But Israel isn't trying to occupy Gaza, they aren't trying to rule over the people or even to use them as slaves. If the people of Gaza decide to sit peacefully and refuse to obey orders, that's not a problem for Israel. Israel just wants them to die. And that's a lot easier to accomplish if they aren't fighting back.

There is one winning strategy in this kind of situation -- make the enemy's plans too expensive or difficult to accomplish. If their plan is to enslave you, you die before you obey. If their plan is just to kill you, you fight back and make that as difficult as you possibly can.

"Though violence is not lawful, when it is offered in self-defense or for the defense of the defenseless, it is an act of bravery far better than cowardly submission. The latter benefits neither man nor woman. Under violence, there are many stages and varieties of bravery. Every man must judge this for himself. No other person can or has the right."
