What makes a man attractive? Hint: Look at his limbs

Women prefer a man with legs that are about half his height, according to previous research; scientists believe that is an evolutionary result of women wanting to choose only healthy men. Legs that are too short, for example, have been linked to type 2 diabetes. But other proportions, such as arm length to body height or whether the elbow and knee divide a limb in half, can also relate to a person's health. Do they influence women's views as well?

To answer this, researchers collected average body proportions from roughly 9000 men in the U.S. military and used them to create computer-generated images of male models (pictured). The scientists made the model's arms and legs slightly longer or shorter, and then asked more than 800 heterosexual U.S. women to rank each model's attractiveness.

How long the model's arms were relative to his height didn't seem to matter [open, DOI: 10.1098/rsos.171790] [DX], the team reports today in Royal Society Open Science. And women cared only a little about how the elbow or knee divided a limb. But as seen in previous work, women noticed if the legs made up more or less than half his height—and they didn't like it.

Is this somehow news? It's been known since ancient times that women (and men) find a symmetrical body appealing compared to one that is somehow a little odd or not-symmetrical. So that freakishly tall or short people appear odd and unattractive shouldn't really be much of a surprise to anyone. But it's nice of them to replicate this in studies over and over again but could they please note that they are not providing new knowledge but merely replicating previous results. So humans have not changed their preferences in attractiveness of mates yet again. Whoohoo.

This isn't about symmetry, it's about proportions.

WTF is wrong with you? Those of us with nerd cards, and the correct leg-to-body ratio, can now approach a woman and scientifically prove to her that she is attracted to us! Everyone believes science!

Not only have I bookmarked that study on my phone, I've added a tape measure case right next to the phone case on my belt.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go stretch my legs.

Wait -- republicans and conservatives don't believe in global warming, but that Sarah Palin was hot.

The length of your legs did not contribute to either effect. You can keep your tape measure, unless you are hoping she'll find out if you measure up. Kinda old though, but I guess you incels will take what you can get.

In the 1980s there was a study being talked about that women preferred men whose thighs were equal or smaller diameter to their own...

Not news, but easier to measure than concepts like: women's libido has a strong positive correlation to their endogenous testosterone levels, high testosterone levels will lead to facial hair growth in women, therefore...
