What makes a man attractive? Hint: Look at his limbs

Women prefer a man with legs that are about half his height, according to previous research; scientists believe that is an evolutionary result of women wanting to choose only healthy men. Legs that are too short, for example, have been linked to type 2 diabetes. But other proportions, such as arm length to body height or whether the elbow and knee divide a limb in half, can also relate to a person's health. Do they influence women's views as well?

To answer this, researchers collected average body proportions from roughly 9000 men in the U.S. military and used them to create computer-generated images of male models (pictured). The scientists made the model's arms and legs slightly longer or shorter, and then asked more than 800 heterosexual U.S. women to rank each model's attractiveness.

How long the model's arms were relative to his height didn't seem to matter [open, DOI: 10.1098/rsos.171790] [DX], the team reports today in Royal Society Open Science. And women cared only a little about how the elbow or knee divided a limb. But as seen in previous work, women noticed if the legs made up more or less than half his height—and they didn't like it.

roughly 9000 men in the U.S. military

So, generally younger, thinner, more athletic than they're used to in general. Still, this is getting almost multicultural if you have "julie 6 pack" average THOT off the street used to looking at soy boys, fat dudes, gay dudes, old dudes, dad bods, and skinny hipsters all day is going to look unusually at a fine specimen of masculinity. In the same way that when looking at mostly silicone women, men like the best silicone jobs they can find within that set of unusual looking women, but they're rare enough in the wild that they don't look like normal dating partners so I'm not sure it imples much if anything. In a fetish like manner perhaps. Given a set of women with Vulcan ears, find me the hottest Vulcan ears doesn't mean normal woman ears should be such and such pointy-ness. Or for a more practical study, consider some currently popular body mods like tattoos or piercings, the sexiest ear gauge doesn't imply much if most guys wouldn't date a girl with giant ear holes regardless if one happens to be the sexiest of an unusual collection of large ear holed women.

I'm just saying average woman vs hot guys might have some selection issues WRT the mismatch. Is the guy at the bar getting the most action, similar or identical in appearance to the most successful male stripper? Usually not. Different "talent pools" might have an impact.

The scientists made the model's arms and legs slightly longer or shorter

How do they do that without screwing up the thickness ratios and general muscularity?

My guess is warping my calves or quads using funhouse mirrors makes them look weird regardless of simple length, and weird looking muscles can't be healthy. Or funhouse mirror manipulated quads vs my normal-ish looking arms makes for an uncanny valley effect.

The right way to run it would have been to compare unmodified guys by ratio. My guess, seeing as you can't really get away with clickbait based on a null result, is they did that and there was no signal until they started funhouse mirror messing with bodies, at which point they actually discovered excessive photoshopping is unattractive, which is not exciting clickbait.

Haha... admit it. You're attracted to bad boys. To be a bit serious for a change, you can either recognize how your own instincts are counterproductive and then seek out better guys (even if some of them are omg-incels-run-for-the-hills! just because you're a shithead and have conveniently categorized all men with scores less than some positive integer n as evil incels and men with scores ≥ n as rapists... n seems to be somewhere around 3 or 4 but fuck all if I know), which is a strategy I've found useful, or you can keep dating asshole dipshit jerks because you're too weak to master your own instincts, dye your hair blue, and get all unhinged because All Men Are Evil and you fuckheads can't imagine any other way of obtaining your goals than controlling men's lives and bodies all the way back to the temperance movements.

Fortunately, enough men are starting to figure your crap out to start putting a stop to it.

recognize how your own instincts are counterproductive

For varying definitions of productivity, you may have some point there. Alternatively, you might learn to trust your instincts, just to see how that works out. Of course, then you would have to change your definition of productivity.

How do they do that without screwing up the thickness ratios and general muscularity?

Given that magazines regularly stretch the legs on images of women, I guess there's sufficient experience of doing so in a way that the result looks well.

Oh noes! VLM as gone the full "soy boy"!

average THOT off the street used to looking at soy boy

THOT? Women walking the streets, at night, in revealing attire? Men with tits?

    Thoth: [wikipedia.org]

Thoth (/θoʊθ, toʊt/; from Greek Θώθ thṓth; derived from Egyptian ḏḥw.ty) is one of the deities of the Egyptian pantheon. In art, he was often depicted as a man with the head of an ibis or a baboon, animals sacred to him. His feminine counterpart was Seshat, and his wife was Ma'at.[3]

Head of an Ibis, or a Baboon? Not looking good for the VLM.

    Soy Boys: [rationalwiki.org]

Soy boy is an insult towards an allegedly feminine or low-testosterone (and therefore unmasculine and unmanly) male. Its meaning comes from the pseudoscientific claim that soy contains estrogens (in fact, it contains phytoestrogens). These phytoestrogens, in turn, are claimed to cause feminization such as breast growth (definitely not) and reduce male fertility (the science isn't yet clear). In short, the reasoning appears to be: "We were saying that red meat is manlier than tofurkey all along. This proves it!"

The cultural obsession or moral panic about excessive soy consumption is largely contained to the West and it frequently lodged by the alt-right against leftist, liberal or other non-right wing males as an indictment of their allegedly low levels of testerone, feminized features and/or behaviors. However, soy is native to the continent of Asia and has been consumed for many millenia by its inhabitants as a staple in their diets without detriment to health.[3]

    But then:

The right way to run it would have been to compare unmodified guys by ratio.

And, . . . VLM goes for the anti-semantic circumcision resistance. Definitely low-T.

It is a vain comfort I'll admit, but I do enjoy seeing the alt-righters and such others always falling back on 5th grade insults after getting their intellectual asses handed to them. Not bad, can see how it got the "funny" mod.

THOT aka that hoe over there, sort of a generic female unironic "Sex in the city" viewer

However, soy is native to the continent of Asia and has been consumed for many millenia by its inhabitants as a staple in their diets without detriment to health.

Uh... yeah. Most see it as something similar to how some races can genetically process milk proteins as an adult, or ethanol, vastly better than other races. Also, speaking of the oft discriminated against Asian-Bro (see the meme of 'non-asian minorities') consider the new-right meme of the bugman, a different way to avoid reaching the peak of Maslows hierarchy of needs. Bugman culture has its own set of problematic behaviors, cape-shit, collecting, eternal childhood, stuff like that.

Aside from the biochemistry, there's a large side dish of soy consumption being a proxy for veganism-of-the-worst-sort, its just as good real food but its really expensive everyone look at me and admire my social convictions which make me a better person than a milk drinker BTW it costs a lot more so I'm rich. In the spirit of "black people food" being soul food, or "stuff white people like" being stereotypical white people food, expensive bad tasting socially advocating soy look alike products are generally "shitty people food" with a very high but not perfect correlation.
