The Trump administration told lawmakers the U.S. government has reached a deal to put Chinese telecommunications company ZTE Corp back in business after it pays a significant fine and makes management changes, a senior congressional aide said on Friday.
U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to confirm the deal in a tweet late on Friday. “I closed it down then let it reopen with high level security guarantees, change of management and board, must purchase U.S. parts and pay a $1.3 Billion fine.”
The reported deal involving China’s second-largest telecommunications equipment maker ran into immediate resistance in Congress, where Democrats and Trump’s fellow Republicans accused him of bending to pressure from Beijing to ease up on a company that U.S. intelligence officials have suggested poses a significant risk to U.S. national security.
ZTE was banned in April from buying U.S. technology components for seven years for breaking an agreement reached after it violated U.S. sanctions against Iran and North Korea.. After ZTE makes a series of changes it would now be allowed to resume business with U.S. companies, including chipmaker Qualcomm Inc.
The deal, earlier communicated to officials on Capitol Hill by the Commerce Department, requires ZTE to pay a substantial fine, place U.S. compliance officers at the company and change its management team, the aide said.
The Commerce Department would then lift an order issued in April preventing ZTE from buying U.S. products. ZTE shut down most of its production after the ruling was announced.
Fox News said Trump told them on Thursday that he had negotiated the $1.3 billion fine with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a phone call.
ZTE, which is publicly traded but whose largest shareholder is a Chinese state-owned enterprise, agreed last year to pay a nearly $900 million penalty and open its books to a U.S. monitor. The penalty stemmed from for breaking an agreement after it was caught illegally shipping U.S. goods to Iran and North Korea, in an investigation dating to the Obama administration.

Pick a nice "diverse" country and move. You can pick a country without whites or without Christians. You can learn a new language. I'm sure you will find the experience enriching and rewarding. Be sure to get your US citizenship properly revoked ASAP, so that you won't have to pay taxes to America.

Paul Weyrich, fantastic conservative thinker, founded our Heritage Foundation. And he said something very smart, he said "our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down." A little hard to understand, what it means is that the less folks vote, the better it is for conservatives. And the more folks vote, the worse it is for us. Bernie's a smart cookie, he understood that. And he tried to energize the folks who didn't care about politics. Especially our incredible young people. Smart idea. But, the Democratic Party isn't democratic. They call it Democratic. But certain people get A LOT more votes than everybody else. They call them superdelegates. And the superdelegates, compared to Bernie's people, they're a lot more conservative. Bernie brought in all those people, but he went around calling himself a socialist. Which to a lot of folks is scary. And to the superdelegates, possibly that was scary. Right? So they told him "no," they liked Crooked Hillary much better. And maybe they owed her a favor. Or maybe she had very special dossiers about them. Like the phony dossier she had about me.
Believe me, I would have loved to run against Bernie. Much nicer person than Crooked Hillary. And even easier to beat. She beat him, and she's terrible at acting. I would say, do you want to pick me, a very successful actor and businessman, very rich, very new to politics, or do you want to pick Bernie, a career politician? Do you want a guy who would be the oldest President ever and, frankly, is bald? Or do you want a guy who's a very young 69 and has a full head of hair? And do you want the full-blown socialism where college is free and your college degree is worth nothing, or do you just want the universal healthcare? Which, by the way, I'm working on for you. Working very hard on that one.
Bernie tried to energize folks who never voted. But Crooked Hillary didn't pick him as her VP. And, maybe he didn't want to be her VP. She picked someone very boring. Very crooked. And very dumb. Corrupt Kaine. And I think so many Bernie folks became de-energized. Bernie brought them in. But when Bernie got booted, maybe they lost interest. Like when you're very horny, you want to jump in bed with someone sexy. But you see a picture of Crooked Hillary. Or you think about her. And bing bang boom, there goes the sexy mood. She does that to many people. Whatever it was, so many folks didn't vote. Could have voted but didn't. If they all got behind one guy -- or lady -- that person could win. Without taking any votes from me. Or from Crooked Hillary. But, they stayed home. Or stayed at work. While I won OVERWHELMINGLY!!!!
