The Inquirer reports that Huawei has ended the support for bootloaders on its devices. This greatly reduces the utility and desireability of the phones for developers and others keen on customization. It's for our own good, apparently:

"In order to deliver the best user experience and prevent users from experiencing possible issues that could arise from ROM flashing, including system failure, stuttering, worsened battery performance, and the risk of data being compromised, Huawei will cease providing bootloader unlock codes for devices launched after May 25, 2018," the firm burbled.

***FUCK YOU*** HUAWEI, EAT SHIT AND GET FED LEGS FIRST INTO A WOODCHIPPER ON THE SLOW SETTING.

You're an example of why humanity is doomed. We can't have nice things because of greedy smegma garglers like you. Computer tchnology in 2018 is less free than it has ever been.

I stayed away from smartphones for *years* because the bootloaders were locked. Then, some of them started unlocking them and so I took the plunge. I run a custom kernel and a mutilated Android ROM, and as much as I revile Android being the only official ROM for most phones, at least it's *mostly* open source and I can run Linux code if I can get it rooted and chrooted. Newer phones and newer versions of android are making this increasingly difficult.

Die in a fire, Huawei, may you suffer through it long enough for the fire to reach your heart before killing you.

What will you do when no recent modern smart phone can be rooted and blocks all bootloaders?

For me, the Samasung Galaxy is "enough". This device rooted does everything I need.

I will stop carrying a smartphone. If dumb flip phones are no longer available, I'll stop carrying a phone altogether. I might build a raspberry-pi-esque substitute that looks like a homemade bomb, one of the models that has a 4G modem, and at least then I'll be able to run a pure, unmolested copy of Fedora or whatever I like.
