Trump Administration Makes 15,000 Additional H-2B Visas available
The Department of Homeland Security said Friday it would provide businesses another 15,000 H-2B visas to bring low-skilled foreign workers to the U.S. this summer, offering a modest infusion to the popular program.
The number of visas available each year for seasonal work is capped by statute at 66,000, evenly divided between the summer and winter seasons. Congress declined to lift that cap during negotiations this spring. It did, however, give the secretary of homeland security authority to issue up to 69,000 more this summer if she determines there is sufficient need.
A range of businesses—including fisheries, landscapers and those in summer tourist spots—have complained about worker shortages and have been waiting to see if Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will use that authority. But people who support restrictions on immigration, including some in the White House, argue that foreign workers drive down American wages and oppose additional visas.
Faced with a similar choice last summer, then-DHS Secretary John Kelly also provided an additional 15,000 visas but cast it as a one-time only move.

My son is a high quality person and I applaud his transparency.
We're building our beautiful Border Wall, very quickly. And it's transparent too. You have to be able to see through it. As horrible as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don’t see them -- they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It’s over. As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall. In other words, if you can’t see through that wall -- so we're building a steel wall with openings, but you have to have openings because you have to see what’s on the other side of the wall.
We're building the wall. Believe me. We're building the wall. Don't even think about it. And we're building it very quickly. And by the way, I want people to come in. I want TREMENDOUS numbers of people to come in. But you know what, they have to come in through a process, they have to come in legally. They have to come in legally. And I don't mind having a #BigBeautifulDoor [twitter.com] in that wall so that people can come into this country legally. Not too many. Not in a lottery -- they call it a visa lottery, I just call it a lottery.
Let me tell you, the Halloween terrorist came into our country through what is called the "Diversity Visa Lottery Program," a Chuck Schumer beauty. And he killed 8 people. Although we were very lucky with that one, he killed 6 foreigners. And only 2 Americans. He went after the foreigners. So different from San Beranardino. Because of me. Because ISIS knows I'll move very strongly on them if they hurt too many Americans. Not like Obama. In many respects, you know, they honor President Obama. ISIS is honoring President Obama. He is the founder of ISIS. He is the founder of ISIS, okay? He's the founder! He founded ISIS! The co-founder would be crooked Hillary Clinton. Co-founder! Crooked Hillary Clinton! And that's what it's about! Obama is the founder and Hillary is the co-founder. People say I'm being sarcastic when I say that, I'm not being sarcastic. Believe me.
But we need to keep illegals out. I want merit based. And I love the low-skilled foreign workers, they have a lot of merit. They're working very hard. That's what I want. That's what the American people want. And that's what our great, great corporations want. It's why they elected me -- OVERWHELMINGLY. I want folks who are going to come into our Country and get to work. Not so many terrorists like Obama was bringing in, I call it terror tourism. We had so many tourists coming from North Korea, so many from Iran. Venezuela, Chad, Libya, Syria, Yemen and Somalia. Very special countries, I don't have hotels in any of those places. I built ZERO hotels in those places. Because they're shithole countries. If I did hotels there, it would seriously downgrade my brand. TRUMP. One of the world’s finest and most luxurious brands. And when those countries send us their tourists, they're not sending their best. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing trucks. They're bringing guns. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. But we can't take the chance, folks. And our fabulous Supreme Court knows we can't take that chance. Thank you, Neil!!!!
