How-to-Geek has a quick overview of the best places to find free audiobooks legally. Great for commutes, road trips, and other travel, these collections include more than just public domain titles. The quality varies but good ones are out there. The list starts out with the obvious destinations of Project Gutenberg and LibriVox and is topped off with a mention of your local public library, which should not be overlooked.

They even mention the obvious answer. OK I don't know how the system works in every country but for most western countries it is probably about the same. They also supply you with ebooks. It's a personal preference thou and I like to read my books and have them printed on dead trees. But if I ever was to change my mind my next stop would indeed be the library.

I have only so many hours in the day.
Doctors orders have me out walking a lot (running a little). Yes I can listen to music while doing this.
But I can also listen to audio books, and get dual use out of the time spent.
I get mine from the local library. I don't see me paying for an audiobook.
I haven't actually visited the library in over two years. (My local library as agreements with other libraries so I have several to choose from) for audiobooks and ebooks.
All you need is a your library card and the Overdrive app on your phone.
Find your audiobooks, download, enjoy, all within the app.
(And never worry about a fine, because they are automatically returned after the lending period.)
These use to be horribly done back in the day of tapes and CDroms, but now the majority are really well produced. Some with single readers, some with a couple different readers, usually one male and one female.
On long road trips we often pipe it through the car audio system. We can usually find some books both of us will like.
I also have a large collection of Ebooks, but they, like paper books, usually can't be multi-tasked with walking, and I get car sick if I try to read in a moving vehicle.
No, you are mistaken. I've always had this sig.

From the humble bundle, I got a bunch of Doctor Who audio books (Dalek Empire) that is great quality.
Never really got into a.books until I heard that.

Same here plus I have a long commute. However, I pirate simply because it is more convenient. I do pay for amazon audible subscription and local library is an option, but yet pirating is faster and simpler and the files play on my little devices that don't support DRM but work for weeks on one charge.
Until they fix the model, fuck them.

I walk and read ebooks every day
Is this a "can't chew gum and walk at the same time" type of problem for you?

Have you seen any of the videos of people walking without looking and running into things? This is generally, because people aren't paying attention to where they are going. Yes, meme is people looking at smartphone / texting and walking into walls, etc.
Audiobooks are a good remedy for that. Since, you're a lot more likely to notice a wall, if you're looking where you're going.
