How-to-Geek has a quick overview of the best places to find free audiobooks legally. Great for commutes, road trips, and other travel, these collections include more than just public domain titles. The quality varies but good ones are out there. The list starts out with the obvious destinations of Project Gutenberg and LibriVox and is topped off with a mention of your local public library, which should not be overlooked.

Speaking of Australia, some books still in copyright in the US are out of copyright there, and Project Gutenberg of Australia has them. One of the more notable authors available is George Orwell, who died 68 years ago.

Not sure about the legalities-- is it illegal to download 1984 inside the US, even if you are an Australian citizen? Is it illegal for a US citizen visiting Australia to download 1984 while there? Is it illegal linking to mention the existence of 1984 and a general description of where it is, without providing an actual link? Not that loser rules like those matter.

    http://gutenberg.net.au/ [gutenberg.net.au] Has a link to Animal Farm :).

I tried to listen to Animal Farm the audio book, but it's just a bunch of mooing and oinking and animal screams.

Put me off my steak dinner, tell you what!

Careful, you're on a slippery slope that leads to becoming a vegetarian (gasp!) Then you might feel virtuous that you're helping to save the world from Global Warming by eating less meat, thus reducing the need to raise cattle, which will reduce methane emissions from, well, you know where. Animal noises. Sorry I spoiled your dinner even more. The price of progress, you know.

But see, if we stop raising cattle, there will be no pigs to see over the other animals (which there will be none of) and therefore the idea of the whole Animal Farm story will become lost to future generations!

        PLEASE! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
