How-to-Geek has a quick overview of the best places to find free audiobooks legally. Great for commutes, road trips, and other travel, these collections include more than just public domain titles. The quality varies but good ones are out there. The list starts out with the obvious destinations of Project Gutenberg and LibriVox and is topped off with a mention of your local public library, which should not be overlooked.

Generally, the Author has been long dead for any books on Librivox or Gutenberg. The nice thing is that their works are available in a nice repository that is also Legal. Though, it's entirely possible that your countrie's copyright laws are different than USA copyright laws and it could still be illegal to download some of the material from the sites. Sane copyright laws would be nice. You know, ones that would put Mickey Mouse in the public domain. I would even be willing to give Disney or other similar entities reasonable exceptions. Since, it doesn't look like we'll be able to make progress in the public domain without making some concessions at this point.
