Trump orders creation of space-focused U.S. military branch

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he was ordering the creation of a sixth branch of the military to focus on space, a move critics said could harm the Air Force.

"It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space," Trump said before a meeting of his National Space Council. "We are going to have the Air Force and we're going to have the 'Space Force.' Separate but equal. It is going to be something," he said later.

The United States is a member of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which bars the stationing of weapons of mass destruction in space and only allows for the use of the moon and other celestial bodies for peaceful purposes.

The idea of a Space Force has been raised before, by Trump and previous administrations, with proponents saying it would make the Pentagon more efficient. It has also faced criticism from senior military officials. Air Force Chief of Staff General David Goldfein told a 2017 congressional hearing that creating a new space branch would "move us in the wrong direction." The Air Force oversees most of the nation's space-related military activity.

The move would require the budgetary approval of the U.S. Congress, which has been divided on the idea.

We should have a separate "Space" topic on SoylentNews at this point. We are all going to be drafted to fight aliens eventually.

There are very few countries in the world where your family goes to prison with you. North Korea is one. Do you think we should follow their example?

All 8 years of the Obama administration, illegal aliens were separated from their supposed children. Yeah, about that... lots of them are kidnapped children being used to get some sort of status advantage in our legal system. Evidently the illegal aliens got better treatment if they had children, so they brought children even if they had to swipe them.

Anyway, we can change that, but illegal aliens don't deserve better treatment than other criminals. You should get to take your kids to prison if you are somebody like Flynn or Manafort. You should get to take your kids to prison if you are a car thief, arsonist, burgler, prostitute, drug dealer, or whatever. Yes? No? If you don't agree, then you aren't being consistent.

It'd be a major change to our prison system. Costs there would skyrocket, though perhaps there would be savings elsewhere.

The way it looks, Trump may take his children to prison with him.

On this particular point, for this particular example, why, yes, yes I do believe that detaining a family at the border for a matter of paperwork insufficiency is a very good reason to have a holding facility where they can be together while things get straightened out. Prison for people who have done nothing wrong but stand in line with what they thought was sufficient documentation but the bureaucracy doesn't see it that way? Innocent until proven guilty isn't just for citizens, or is it? Are all your citizenship papers in order and on your person? (after the cop in the field took them from you and threw them in the river?) No, well, let's toss you into Prison until you can make them appear from thin air then, shall we?
