[...] Microsoft has now revealed that source of its troubles: mildly warm weather. That day in Dublin, where Microsoft's North Europe data center resides, the high temperature reached a pleasant 18°C or about 64°F in Freedom Units.

[...] Microsoft's Azure status history explains, "On 19 Jun 2018, Data Center Critical Environments systems in one of our data centers in the North Europe region experienced an increase in outside air temperature."

[...] Azure customers who rely on the North Europe region may want to make sure they have outage plans in place. By next Friday, the weather forecast in Dublin anticipates temperatures as high as 24°C or 75°F.

According to a 2016 study by Emerson Network Power and the Ponemon Institute, about 12 per cent of data center outages can be attributed to weather, with the remainder being human and mechanical error.

It was an 11 hours disruption.

65F is only any variety of warm if you're just coming out of winter and it feels better than Balls Cold.

A few years back, I visited Ireland for a conference at just about this time of the year. Since it was supposed to be summer (you know, summer solstice) I went there equipped with no more than a shirt and a light jacket. The first indication, that this was optimistic, was when, along with the conference material, they gave us umbrellas. I had been planning to spend the day after the conference walking around the countryside; instead, I spent it in my room, because it was too cold to be outside, wearing only a shirt and a light jacket!

It would seem that Microsoft assumed that there would be no need for air conditioning in their data center, and that leaving the windows open would be enough to cool their computers. (Shouldn't it be? 18°C sounds low for a computer room.)

Despite my experience with the weather, Ireland impressed me as a beautiful country with wonderful people.

Ireland is one of those countries where we are uniquely positioned to understand that it's "Climate Change" and not "Global Warming" because jaysus we're seeing none of this warming. That said, we're getting a fierce decent summer this year. In places the grass is turning yellow.
