Covered pretty much everywhere (front page of CNN/FOX/younameit).

With the main swing vote in the U.S. Supreme Court leaving, and a replacement nominated by President Trump, the right wing of the court should become clearly dominant, allowing Roe v. Wade opponents, and other right-wing causes, a new chance at victory.

takyon: SCOTUSblog has a round-up of coverage:

Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement today, effective July 31, 2018. Amy Howe covered the news for this blog; her coverage first appeared at Howe on the Court. Other early coverage comes from Richard Wolf of USA Today, Michael D. Shear of The New York Times; Bill Mears of Fox News; Robert Barnes of The Washington Post; Jessica Mason Pieklo of Rewire.News; Nina Totenberg of NPR; Lawrence Hurley of Reuters; Greg Stohr of Bloomberg; and Pete Williams of NBC News. Analysis of Justice Kennedy's legacy comes from Noah Feldman of Bloomberg; Wolf of USA Today; Mears of Fox News; and Reuters staff. Coverage of the reaction from Congress and the President comes from Carl Hulse of The New York Times; Alex Pappas and Mears of Fox News; Seung Min Kim and Josh Dawsey of The Washington Post; and Alex Seitz-Wald and Rebecca Shabad of NBC News. Patrick Gregory of Bloomberg has a piece looking at potential replacements for Kennedy.

Early commentary comes from Jill Lawrence for USA Today; Bill Blum in The Progressive; Emily Bazelon for The New York Times; Elizabeth Slattery for The Daily Signal; Garrett Epps for The Atlantic; Richard Hasen for Slate; Ian Millhiser of Think Progress; and Joshua Matz for The Washington Post. Another piece in the Post comes from Philip Bump, who focuses on control of the Senate. More commentary comes from Scott Lemieux for NBC News and Matt Ford for The New Republic. Andrew Cohen writes for TNR, and he also has a piece in Rolling Stone. Commentary from Vox comes from Dylan Matthews, Andrew Prokop and Matt Yglesias. Pieklo and Imani Gandy released an emergency podcast reacting to the news. Various law professors give their analysis for Stanford Law School Blog.

Anthony Kennedy was sworn in on February 18, 1988.

Has it occurred to you that the bird eggs thing is because we treat non-human life as a resource? Do you *really* want us to start treating human beings as literal human resources, as "biodiversity stocks?" Jesus, are you ever loathsome. Do you even think before you lean over and vomit this trash onto the Internet?

I simply want human lives to be equal to animal lives, currently some animals are more equal under the law than others. The egg of a spotted owl has more right to life than a first trimester human.

If human beings become an endangered species, presumably they would have the same protection as a spotted owl. Otherwise, why should they need more protection than say, cockroaches or chickens?

Unlike the spotted owl, humans are not an endangered species; but that's not the only reason your example falls short.

You don't read so good, do ya boy?Let me clue you in on something: human life is cheap when there's too many of us. And legal, accessible abortion is a way of preventing it from becoming *cheaper,* in large part by preventing people from being saddled with even MORE children they can't possibly care for.

Unless you want to care for all those babies who are born who otherwise wouldn't be? Because that will be a fuckton more expensive that what we have now, and as we've seen, you only give a shit about your own wallet.

Stop this hollow, worthless virtue-signalling pretense of caring for consistency in the law. You don't give a single good god damn about anything but your own immediate financials, and you haven't got the humanity or the foresight necessary to expand your horizons any further. Large masses of people like you are the reason the situation in this country has deteriorated so far. You're a useful idiot, emphasis on "idiot." And if you think you're fooling anyone but yourself, you've got another thing coming.

Dude. You really just said killing human beings is a good way to keep lives from becoming less valuable. Are you going to suggest we start with the Jews next?

Good grief, do you really think a blastula is equivalent to a full, functioning, independent human being?

Maybe I ought to clarify here a bit: personally I'm actually against third-term abortions except in cases of incest, rape, or death/serious harm to the mother's health. That said, you're committing one of the most basic category errors it's possible for the anti-abortion crowd to commit, and against all the odds, have actually managed to surprise and disappoint me with your aggressive cluelessness. I thought you were at least slightly more logical than that.

            It's certainly not a squirrel.

That's really beside the point to me though. My objection to any abortion except in the case of a non-viable child (would not survive) or danger to the mother is purely based on personal responsibility. If you're going to voluntarily do something you know damned good and well results in pregnancy, you shouldn't get to abjure the responsibility if one results from your actions. If it weren't cheap and simple to have two 98%+ forms of birth control going on at the same time I might temper my position but that is not the case for anyone in the US.

You're not a woman, and you'll never be pregnant, so your opinion on this counts for somewhere between jack squat and diddly squat. If anything, you're an argument for legal abortion up to the 300th trimester. Thanks for playing, have a nice day.
