from the sex-sells dept.

In a 2017 report that went widely unnoticed, a female captain in the Australian Army recommended a novel solution to combat stress: sex. More specifically, she wondered whether making sexual options, potentially including prostitution, available to soldiers in combat would help troops deal with downrange stress. You can read the report yourself here.

My understanding is that the original source of the article was in the Australian Army's official blog, but was pulled after it became, for reasons that are clear if you read the piece, extremely controversial.

Here's the thing: the author is not wrong. Well, not entirely, anyway.

As the article states, science shows that "sex helps satisfy personal, social and physical needs, reduces stress and is inextricably linked to physical and mental wellbeing." The thing is, the military brass doesn't see it that way.

Capitalism, is there anything it can't solve?

The thing is, the military brass doesn't see it that way.

Nobody in the military wants it that way, too much opportunity for love triangles and "He's fucking that girl who should be mine, so guess who I'm ordering to charge the machine gun nest, hint, it aint me and it aint her"

Its the same with the gay sex thing. Especially when it comes to promotion boards and competition for, well, everything.

Combat operations are stressful enough without adding sex. Leave that to the civilians back home, leave time, etc.

Thus whores* instead of girlfriends. If you fall in love with a whore while making use of her services, you're in need a psych discharge anyway for being batshit insane.

    * Y'all, don't go thinking that I say whore with derision. I am a huge fan of their enterprising spirit, their strong support of our capitalist system, and their lack of puritanical hangups. I admire the hell out of them.

There's a side dish of military culture the civilians might not be aware of, the stereotype of living in the barracks being such a shit show that all Army Privates marry the first stripper they meet who's willing, then they move out of the Bs into wedded bliss for what seems like days maybe even weeks before the breakup and the stripper gets the GIs alimony and all that.

So yeah, like one week after the pleasure battalion is formed, all those chicks are going to be married dependas and like two weeks later they're all going to be divorced (or just cheating on the side) because thats how boot E-1 privates roll with life...

The stereotype is only a stereotype because probably only 5% of privates live like that, but still, 5% is way too high.

The leftists being as they are, you know they'll be required by the media and academia to issue "dudes with dicks who identify as chicks" to non-gay soldiers who ask for a girl, and when the inevitable happens they'll blame everyone, especially the people not involved, for being transphobic and a warm hole is a warm hole and all that stuff thats super politically correct but everyone knows isn't true.

Allocation is going to be a problem, the army can barely issue the right size boot to each private, good luck issuing the right whore to each private. I suppose you could up the ante and go the polygamy route just to shut them up, like eating at the DFAC buffet line I'd like two from menu A and one from menu B and three from menu C thanks.

Ah, the story older than dirt. Some people might remember the David-Bathsheba-Uriah thing all the way back in the Old Testament. David wants Uriah's wife so he sends him on a suicide mission.

Also the "suicide mission" trivializes the problem when the real Army discipline problem would minor stuff happening a thousand times more often like bad NCOER evals or bad promotion board results or refusal to cooperate with any number of theoretically optional things like signing off on leave or MOS reclass training or applying to cool guy schools.
