KTLA, TV Channel 5 in Southern California, reports

A woman was critically injured after being stung "hundreds of times" by a swarm of bees in Lake Forest [South Orange County] Monday morning [July 16], and three others--including two firefighters--were also injured, officials said.

[...] "Units arrived on scene and they found her basically completely covered with bees from head to toe", Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito told KTLA.

The swarm was so severe that firefighters didn't have time to put the special safety gear on that they would normally wear while responding to such incidents, according to Bommarito.

"They got out, they started felling the bees, they saw the patient down this cul-de-sac completely covered--her face was completely covered with bees", he said.

They grabbed [a carbon dioxide] extinguisher in an effort to remove the bulk of the bees off of the victim, then "basically dragged" her to a safe area about 200 yards away, according to the fire captain.

"She was basically non-responsive" to firefighter commands, although she could still move, Bommarito said.

The woman, described as being about 50 years old, was stung "hundreds of times", according to a tweet from the Fire Authority. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The firefighters were stung "multiple times" and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

I have seen other stories about humans in SoCal being swarmed by Africanized "killer" bees. (I am assuming that that is what these were.) It makes me wonder how far north these bugs will range before winters get too cold for them--and how much climate change will exacerbate the situation.

Anybody north of L.A.'s latitude had similar reports where you are?

Re:'Ron For Homes', 'VIP Appliance Service'??!

Errr, mods, I don't think such obvious spam links should be slipping through the editorial process quite this easily, do you?

Ugh. You are correct -- story updated. Thanks for pointing out the error, and quite kindly at that!

I plead exhaustion. Worked a full shift on Sunday. Woke at 2AM, noticed the story queue was empty, got up and tried to find something in the submissions queue. It's the "silly season" when summer vacations slow the release of actual newsworthy stuff. Also, over weekends not much tech/science gets reported. Scoured our news feed in the #rss-bot channel on IRC. Composed and submitted a couple stories for chromas to push out to the site. (I don't know why he was also up at such a wretched hour, but I was so grateful for his assistance!) I saw this story and pushed it out. Failed to give it proper vetting and you, rightly, called us on it. You deserve better and I let you down. I apologize.

Editing on this site is a labor-of-love, we're all volunteers here (no pay whatsoever) so please help us help you.

We get plenty enough political submissions, but actual tech/science story submissions are in relatively short supply, so if you see something interesting -- please send it in!

Besides the IRC feed, another story resource is our Story Bot [soylentnews.org] queue.

If even 10% of our registered users submitted just one story per month, it would make a big difference!

That said, I just woke less than an hour ago, so please forgive any grammar/spelling/phrasing errors. And now it's time for me to get ready for work... again thanks for holding us to high standards -- we DO try!

What is the attitude towards submitting from ye olde website. I see it has some interesting articles. Same with pipedot.

You'll get the inevitable whining from one or two who complain it's a dupe from that other place, but if it's a worthwhile submission likely to spark interest, it never hurts to try!

A lot of us don't have time to visit both places.. if we did not see it here, most likely we won't see it at all.

In short: very strongly frowned upon.

If it were a story that originated there, like Rob proposing to Kathleen, or their announcing being bought by a company, then I do not foresee a problem running such a story.

For quite a stretch, we had some story submissions which were simultaneously submitted to both sites. As the submitters were the original authors of those pieces, they are free to do so, and each site is free to [not] run the story as they choose.

But, if it were a link to a story that otherwise appeared on that site? Don't. Do. That. Better to write your own story submission, instead. You which may choose to reference original sources cited in that article (and possibly others, too) but it would be best if the prose is of your own writing.

IIRC, early on we did have a few verbatim (and uncredited) story submissions where someone verbatim copied a story that appeared on the other site, and submitted it to us. When the exact same story appeared on both sites, the community soundly criticized us -- and IMHO rightly so.

Disclaimer: Ever since the slashcott, I suspect I've been to the other site maybe a dozen times. And, even then, it was mostly to see if an error I found on how things worked here was something we created or something in the code that we inherited from the original slashcode code base.

tl;dr: it's best to write and submit your own stories.

Thanks. I obviously didn't mean posting direct links, but to submit a new item that I found there and I think is interesting but not posted here, along with my own summary.
