KTLA-TV reports:

As authorities sifted the rubble from the fire that burned more than 1,000 residences in Shasta County, they were startled by what they encountered. A soaring transmission tower was tipped over. Tiles were torn off the roofs of homes. Massive trees were uprooted.

Vehicles were moved. In one spot, a fence post was bent around a tree, with the bark on one side sheared off.

[...] This was not typical wildfire damage. Rather, it was strong evidence of a giant, powerful spinning vortex that accompanied the Carr fire on July 26. The tornado-like condition, lasting an hour and a half and fueled by extreme heat and intensely dry brush as California heats up to record levels, was captured in dramatic videos that have come to symbolize the destructive power of what is now California's sixth-most destructive fire.

Wikipedia has an article on fire whirls.

Folks, this one is bad. We have 7 people dead, including some very brave people (RIP!!!). And what, 1,000 houses lost. Totally burned up. Our thoughts and prayers, as always, are with the families & survivors. But look what happened in Greece. In Mati. They had a much smaller fire. But a lot more people died in that one. 90 people, so terrible, right? And a lot of them died because their government made terrible mistakes. This fire in California, it's been going since July 23. Long time. Very strong winds. And it's so bad that even Governor Moonbeam is saying, this is a major disaster. I agree 100%. So I proclaimed a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration. I'm sending my FEMA, I'm sending my military. And a lot of YOUR money. High Tax California, you'd think they'd have money, right? We call it a rainy day fund. But unfortunately they're deeply in debt. So Daddy Trump made it rain.

One thing you can do. Vote Republican. John Cox is going to be a fantastic Governor for California. I have no doubt, no doubt. I don't do these endorsements easily, believe me!!!

I admit that a small part of me hopes Cox will win if only for the puns people will come up with. ("Republicans love Cox!")
