iPhone supplier TSMC shut down factories after virus attack

Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. [(TSMC)] shut down several of its factories last night [Friday] after it its[sic] systems were hit by a computer virus, reports Bloomberg.

TSMC is the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, and supplies components for companies like ADM[sic], Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. The company told Bloomberg that the virus infected a "number of its fabrication tools," but that the "degree of infection varies" from factory to factory. Several have resumed their operations, but others won't come back online until tomorrow. The company indicated that its factories weren't infected by a hacker.

Update: TSMC says third-quarter revenue hit by computer virus

Why is Windows still allowed to be deployed in any line of business role? Anywhere? It is not secure, it has never been secure, it wasn't designed to be secure and it is clear it will never be secure. So much like we finally all admitted this with Flash Player and are in the process of implementing a Final Solution to it, why hasn't industry solved the Windows problem a decade ago by simply banishing it? Can we still feel the slightest twinge of pity for them at this point? IF you do stupid things you are supposed to get a stupid prize. Think of it as evolution in action. If stupidity doesn't kill it won't get culled from the gene pool. Time for companies to go insolvent from lawsuits over doing something as reckless as having a Windows PC deployed in $current_year.

That is how you know it was a Windows exploit. The only time the media explicitly say is if Microsoft is pushing a patch for a fresh "in the wild" zero day and wants users to update. Otherwise they very carefully avoid mentioning that this "computer virus" they are reporting on only afflicts one popular operating system. When there is an iPhone problem, even the reality distortion field of Apple does not stop the press reports from mentioning Apple, showing an iPhone in the story, etc. And on the rare occasion of a UNIX/Linux exploit making news it is always explicitly mentioned. It is like stories of political corruption, where if the party of the perp is not mentioned you always know it was a Democrat because the fact it was a Republican would have been in the headline. No platform mention always means Microsoft. Always.

Remember, the media lies. They lie in almost every story reported. If you don't spot the lie it usually means you don't know enough about the subject being reported upon. They avoid coming right out and saying something untrue that can be proven to be untrue but that is the way amateurs lie, because it is so easy to get caught in. The media are skilled deceivers, the know the best lies are in omission, subtle shading, misdirection and obfuscation of the truth. When those don't work they move to "spin" and only in direst need outright falsehood. But they are all lies because of the intention to deceive. The media has intentionally exerted great efforts over the decades to minimize the knowledge that the overwhelming majority of "computer virus" problems have been "Windows virus" problems. The pattern is far too consistent to apply the "do not attribute to malice that which can adequately be explained by stupidity" rule.

Other than the failed MSNBC venture, Microsoft does not have the influence required to enforce such an iron grip on coverage. Somebody WANTS people to keep running Windows, to not read regular stories about its safety problems, to remain vulnerable. Makes ya wonder. Having a hard time figuring out who.
