A mysterious Russian satellite displaying "very abnormal behaviour" has raised alarm in the US, according to a State Department official. "We don't know for certain what it is and there is no way to verify it," said assistant secretary Yleem Poblete at a conference in Switzerland on 14 August.

She voiced fears that it was impossible to say if the object may be a weapon.

Russia has dismissed the comments as "unfounded, slanderous accusations based on suspicious" [sic].

The satellite in question was launched in October last year. "[The satellite's] behaviour on-orbit was inconsistent with anything seen before from on-orbit inspection or space situational awareness capabilities, including other Russian inspection satellite activities," Ms Poblete told the conference on disarmament in Switzerland.

"Russian intentions with respect to this satellite are unclear and are obviously a very troubling development," she added, citing recent comments made by the commander of Russia's Space Forces, who said adopting "new prototypes of weapons" was a key objective for the force. Ms Poblete said that the US had "serious concerns" that Russia was developing anti-satellite weapons.

[...] [Ms Stickings (Royal United Services Institute - RUSI) said] "The narrative coming from the US is, 'space was really peaceful, now look at what the Russians and Chinese are doing' - ignoring the fact that the US has developed its own capabilities."

If a story contains the word "russia", it should receive some sort of negative score making it less likely to be posted unless it has some real content to offset the probable level of total horseshit contained therein. In the same way you can safely assume that any email with the word "erectile" in it is spam, you can pretty much bet any article with the word "russia" in it is designed to fan the flames of global nuclear war by some crybaby Democrats who can't fathom that warpig Hillary could have lost.

Under such a system of demerits for "russia" articles, this particular one would have never seen the light of day because it amounts to a pile of FUD based on the assertion that a satellite is acting strangely WITHOUT ever explaining what the strange behavior is and comparing that to normal behavior. Out of that vague and meaningless claim, is concocted an entire screed of fearmongering which is then extended to discussion forums. As a result the same types of people who would display vials of yellowcake to the UN to start a war based on lies and misinformation, are whistling and giggling while the pass our future graveyards. Fuck those people. Quit giving them bandwidth to spout their deadly lies. Ignore them into the oblivion where they belong.

I'm kind of enjoying this weird split-brain people have with Russia these days. On the one hand they yell from the rooftops about Russia interfering with the election and getting Trump in the White House, but whenever anything negative about Russia comes out from the government it's all "Stop picking on them, they are our friends!" Like WTF pick a side already.

I'm... pretty certain that those are two separate groups of people.

No, in many cases it's the exact same people. Also stop abusing ellipsis for pauses.
