China culls 38,000 pigs as swine fever spreads.

More than 38,000 pigs have been culled across China, state media said Sunday, as the world's largest pork producer scrambles to contain an outbreak of African swine fever.

The disease has been discovered in five Chinese provinces, the official Xinhua news service reported, quoting statistics from the country's ministry of agriculture.

China reported its first case of the disease in August in northeast Liaoning province.

Since then the disease has moved south, with cases discovered as far as 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) away, raising concerns it could infect pig farms across the country.

And I am sure the Republican party will be against calling such adhesed protein blobs "meat" because it wasn't grown by a honest to goodness capitalist the way god intended, with genetic engineering to and farm auctions and slaugther houses and manure pits.

Lab grown meat will significantly improve the planet, never mind the needless continued death of animals for generations and generations to come. it'll be like renewable energy -- it'll replace the old methods and still provide the same product we're used to, just differently.

And think about it--it may reform society, or at least politics. No cows except for dairy farmers! What will the Republicans do without being able to spread such huge amounts of BS anymore? There'll only be a little bit compared to now, and they'll need to apply it thinly or learn to pile it up where it really counts.

Perhaps predictably, the industry resistance is starting to creep up. Given that there are Silicon Valley billionaires on the other side and no actual products on the shelves, I don't know how effective it will be.

Ideally, cultured meat would compete on price, but I doubt initial products from Memphis Meats and others are going to be reasonably priced. Hey, maybe that's one way to get around industry-backed labeling laws: put "Meat(s)" in your company's name.

Given that interpretation of kosher rules seems to be in line with contagious magic [wikipedia.org], the DNA came from a forbidden animal and thus makes all it touches and generates unclean. So there will be no kosher lab meat.

If it were sympathetic magic, then Bac'n™ could not be kosher. Contagious magic, however, allows for mock meats meant to imitate forbidden animal products, because they did not actually come from a forbidden animal.
