China culls 38,000 pigs as swine fever spreads.

More than 38,000 pigs have been culled across China, state media said Sunday, as the world's largest pork producer scrambles to contain an outbreak of African swine fever.

The disease has been discovered in five Chinese provinces, the official Xinhua news service reported, quoting statistics from the country's ministry of agriculture.

China reported its first case of the disease in August in northeast Liaoning province.

Since then the disease has moved south, with cases discovered as far as 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) away, raising concerns it could infect pig farms across the country.

Yeah, attempts to make soy taste like meat all fail. I'd rather have a decent Gardenburger, one of the ones that doesn't try to hide that it's soy, potato, and other vegetables.

Of course, one must then put bacon++ on it, lest one be suspected of being a vegan incel. Or worse! An MGTOW! A traitor to the patriarchy! Something like Chelsea Manning! amirite?!

    Trigger warning!

Don't know about all of that nonsense. I eat what I like to eat, and never worry about what someone who might be watching thinks. Traitor to the patriarchy? Do some people think like that? Something like Chelsea Manning? You mean Bradley Manning. amirite?

For some reason chefs and food manufacturers presenting vegan food seem to be obsessed with providing these "mock meats". I can see the idea might appeal to someone that enjoys meat but wants to transition to a vegan diet and wants to use them as a sort of temporary meat surrogate. I think there are a lot of fad dieters and hipsters that do the vegan thing now in a casual or temporary way to try and look cool, lose weight, or improve health. My own view is that if you want to become vegan permanently, you're just going to give yourself a hard time if you try and kid yourself these things are like meats. Better to just enjoy foods and their flavors on their own merits. Your palate soon changes. I would almost certainly vomit if I ate meat now. So, for vegans like me, the idea of mock meats is nausea-inducing -- and for meat lovers, they're likely to be a poor imitation. So, yeah, maybe it's better for everyone to just drop the pretense. Lab grown meat will fill the gap.

The real tragedy of people who eat mock meats just to be hipsters is that they're missing things that are so much better.

For example, why screw around with fake hot dogs? That has to be the most disgusting mock meat I've ever tried. Instead, they should grill up some carrots and have carrot dogs. Not totally unlike a hot dog and so delicious, especially with salsa or even just mustard and relish.
