If location and notification nags aren't enough, how about some extension alerts in your browser?

Mozilla tests a new feature in Firefox Nightly at the moment that suggests extensions to users when they visit certain sites on the Internet.

The recommendation feature is turned off by default and needs to be enabled at this point. Extensions may increase the user experience on sites they are designed for, for example by blocking advertisement, enhancing search functionality, or improving privacy.

Firefox users who have used the Nightly version of the web browser for years may remember that Mozilla ran a Test Pilot Study four years ago that displayed extension recommendations to users as well. The study recommended extensions and features of Firefox to the user but it never made it into the web browser and was moved to the graveyard as a consequence.

Once upon a time... We started a computer. We had to observe a flock of programs in Autoexec. Then we started Windows. Asking about codepage. Asking about missing icon in Program manager (no, I don't want this Statistica analysis now, nor to look for an icon for it, just leave this alone!). Connecting to the Internet. Accepting a pop-up about successfully opening COM port, then about making first AT command. Accepting info that we're connected. Opening the client, more dialogs with just OK button, Navigator. Finally, we're in the WWW.
Win95 - much less of these windows, mostly not because they were removed, but because they were moved to the status bar. There were special compartments in a status bar indicating program's state, usually near the right side of the bar. The only thing which pissed users off was "Click here to start". Removed in Win98 or even OSR2.
With modern UIs and no status bars, we're repeating the history - going back to annoying pop-up windows in different shapes, which must be clicked by user.

And I wonder who will apply with these add-ons. Probably companies with lots of money, and of course appetite for user's data.

Who will apply for these? Probably people that will find a way to game the rec algorithm to push their malware infested (remember, mozilla no longer audits add-ons manually because the google cargo cult demands they use an automated system that doesn't work).
