U.S. Unveils First Step Toward New Online Privacy Rules

The US administration called Tuesday for public comments on a "new approach to consumer data privacy" that could trigger fresh regulations of internet companies.

The Commerce Department said the announcement is part of an effort to "modernize US data privacy policy for the 21st century."

The move follows the implementation this year of ramped up data protection rules imposed by the European Union, and a new privacy law enacted in California.

Both measures will impact internet firms whose websites can be accessed around the globe.

Privacy and data protection have come into greater focus in response to these new laws, and also because of growing concerns on how private data is handled following revelations on the hijacking of millions of Facebook user profiles by a political consultancy ahead of the 2016 election.

"The United States has a long history of protecting individual privacy, but our challenges are growing as technology becomes more complex, interconnected and integrated into our daily lives," said David Redl, who heads the agency's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

Hi Kurenai. You can get your post seen by more people by logging in, and you sure as hell aren't fooling anyone by typing AC since you have an...ahem...very distinct writing style.

Also, if you're going to blame the 53% of white women for Trump, you can't then accuse *every single ciswoman in the nation* of being the reason he got elected. I sure as shit didn't vote for him, though I'd have preferred Sanders to Clinton because he'd have been much better for women (and everyone else, really...). The reason 53% of white women voted Trump is mainly economic and racial, with religion as a close third.

In other words: class, race, and fear of spending eternity on fire, all pushed onto them largely by the actions of *men.* Which you are not, correct? Besides which, women can suck just as much as men when it comes to basic human decency. I'm in a unique position to know since I am one *and* date them. You may still have some of that societal brainwashing about women being Beacons of Incorruptible Pure Pureness (TM) taking up space in your head.

We ain't. So don't be surprised that 53% of white women did this; all it proves is economics, racial anxiety, and for all we know pressure from the menfolk are stringer influences than sitting down and going "now which of these two is NOT going to turn this country into a blasted hellscape cross between 1984 and The Handmaiden's Tale for everyone without a Y chromosome?" Honestly, I suspect a good chunk of that 53% aren't even capable of thinking along those lines...

    lol, no

In other words: class, race, and fear of spending eternity on fire, all pushed onto them largely by the actions of *men.*

Both of these statements are true or neither of them are true. Beacons of Incorruptible Pure Pureness™ is obviously not true. We can at least agree on that much. Violating HIPAA is a crime. Violating Title IX is a crime. Throwing around “patriarchy” does not excuse your own actions.

If I've got such all-powerful mind control powers through the all-men hive mind, then why am I unable to convince you shits that maths and computers aren't just for boys? Complicit in your own “oppression” more like it. How do you account for womyn-born-womyn who insist that I am wrong for believing that women can do maths and operate computers and are just as capable of any other career as any man? You can't. If you yourselves just need a man for anything involving numbers, nobody can help you! You can't account for any of it. Your next life will be interesting.

Um...you DO know I work with computers for a living, no? (Or, to be fair, will be again starting mid October; got a niiiiice offer!) I may not be a coder beyond a little Bash, but I never had an aversion to math and have a degree in a hard science, that being geology, not that I ever got to use the fucking thing. I do DIY furniture, too, which requires a certain amount of spatial and mathematical reasoning. I'm on a computer as many hours or more than are spent sleeping in any given day.

You're lumping me in with the nutso crowd, and I would think after years of talking to one another that you'd know better. Then again, you seem to be in the mental equivalent of a full-on autoimmune crisis, unable to recognize a potential ally when you see one...

I'm in a LIBRARY, read your post, literally LOLed uncontrollably, and got a dirty look. It was worth it, thanks for that. :)

BTW, I'm also very into general science, but I couldn't afford many years in college, so the practical side of me said I needed to engineer. Anyway, a few years ago I connected with a hydrogeology professor and did some work for him. I don't know if you've looked into that at all but it was pretty cool and you might enjoy doing some test well and wetland studies, sampling, etc., part-time / occasional. I doubt such jobs are advertised much, more that you'd want to find a hydrogeologist and ask if they need help. Just a thought...

Sorry but I agree with probably-too-lazy-to-log-in-Kurenai perspective on this one. Sexual-offense laws are to educated white women as tough-on-crime drug-wars are to uneducated poor whites overall. One's sexism is the other's racism. There's no evidence proving either reduces crime and yet they're supported. All the while, uneducated white women would routinely vote for everything except promoting their own interests despite women being possibly the most economically oppressed minority nationally or globally.

This is juxtaposed to educated white males no longer voting for the drug wars or against their own economic interests.

So, with the exception of Sanders supporters that refused to vote for either Hillary or Trump, "every single [educated white] ciswoman in the nation" did indeed vote on a demagogy ticket which led to Trump's victory.
