F.D.A. Seizes Documents From Juul Headquarters

The Food and Drug Administration conducted a surprise inspection of the headquarters of the e-cigarette maker Juul Labs last Friday, carting away more than a thousand documents it said were related to the company's sales and marketing practices.

The move, announced on Tuesday, was seen as an attempt to ratchet up pressure on the company, which controls 72 percent of the e-cigarette market in the United States and whose products have become popular in high schools. The F.D.A. said it was particularly interested in whether Juul deliberately targeted minors as consumers.

"The new and highly disturbing data we have on youth use demonstrates plainly that e-cigarettes are creating an epidemic of regular nicotine use among teens," the F.D.A. said in a statement. "It is vital that we take action to understand and address the particular appeal of, and ease of access to, these products among kids."

If only that were true. Anyone stupid enough to eat laundry soap should be culled from the herd.

A big problem is that humans all start out stupid (more precisely, "unwise"), and they only lose that gradually over a long number of years.
It's not curable, it's something you have to deal with.

There's expected lack of wisdom and then there's straight up Darwinian unfitness. Too many kids today are exhibiting the latter rather than the former because their parents had little to no wisdom to pass on. This is a big problem given that only a small portion of the wisdom you attempt to pass on will actually stick without said offspring having relevant experience to anchor the wisdom to. Wisdom you earn yourself comes from having to live with the consequences of your mistakes, which we as a society have decided is a terrible thing to allow to happen to people.

When I was four years old - 1968 - my family lived on a Navy base. My parents never specifically said but I'm quite certain that was to keep the anti-war protestors from corrupting my innocent mind as well as that of my sister.

My father _quite_ sternly instructed me never to cross the street. So did Jeffrey's father - he was four years old two and lived just down the street.

But do you know what Jeffrey told me we could get to _without_ crossing the street?

The Rifle Range. You've heard it before but I'll say it again: I Am Absolutely Serious.

The men would let us play soldier for just a few minutes then march straight over and demand that we leave, never to return.

But do you know what this men _didn't_ do? They didn't tell our fathers so just a few days later Jeffrey and I would be playing soldier again.

I remember once getting down into the pit where the targets could be lowered, changed then raised again.

When I was fifteen I told my mother. She didn't believe me at first but freaked when I managed to convince her. I never told my father, I expect Mom didn't either.

From time to time Mom will quite agonizingly ask me, "Mike - did you _really_ play in the rifle range?"

      "Yes, Mom"

It's not really fair to compare vaping to cigarettes. We had the same shit when I was a kid, we were hysterically warned about Joe Camel with his leather jacket, Ray-Ban shades, and cool demeanor trying to get us addicted to his filthy habit. Or perhaps the Marlboro Man's independent rustic spirit inspired you with manliness in wanting to be a grown-up.

But it was fucking impossible to get away with safely unless you (like my friends and I) did in a neighboring alley before school, and even then we got busted by the truant officer. What I'm getting to is that any punk can pull out a vape, whether in the middle of class or in a hallway or cubicle at Lockheed-Martin, and get their fix on the sly even though both are against policy. You get a bunch of Sherriff dispatchers in their smoke area outside, all smoking vapes, and one or more could be smoking a weed cartridge and nobody could be the wiser.

The real danger is vaping is not in their appeal to youth, but their stealth -- and being sneaky transcends age.
