GE Says It Wins $700 Million Order for First Egypt Nuclear Plant

General Electric Co. secured a $700 million contract to supply turbine and generator units for Egypt's first nuclear power project, the company said.

GE will supply four turbine units for the country's planned 4,800 megawatt El Dabaa nuclear facility, it said Tuesday in a statement. The company will deliver one turbine each year from 2023 until 2026, and the units will begin operating at the rate of one per year from 2026 until 2029, Michael Keroulle, chief commercial officer for GE's Steam Power business, said in a phone interview.

The contract was awarded by AAEM, a joint venture between GE and Russia-based Atomenergomash that will design and supply the turbine system for the reactor, GE said in an emailed response to questions.

Sounds like it awarded itself the contract.

Egypt is both propped up and controlled by the US, not some Muslim caste.

The US had the Egyptian military overthrow the democratically elected government, and then gave them military aid, despite that being against US law.

Despite the Muslim Brotherhood being outlawed, they still ran as independent candidates, and absolutely cleaned up. The Egyptian military (presumably with CIA help, but I can't find any evidence of that) then undermined the government until they could stage a coup.

The current president El-Sisi is a fairly standard brutal dictator of the type the US tends to support.

It would be too easy to equate "democratically elected" with good, though. The Muslim Brotherhood showed the very same signs of starting to clean the administration as any other dictatorship. Historically, Egypt has been run by the military, its presidents being tolerated. If you go square against the military (like the Muslim Brotherhood), this is what you can expect.

That is a good point, and I did not intend to imply the Muslim Brotherhood would be any better than what the Egyptians have had to put up with, but the fact is the military staged a coup, and Mr. Obama'a government declared that it wasn't a coup (even though it absolutely was) so they could continue to sell guns and bombs in egypt.

This is against US law, not that that means anything.
