Machine learning can help healthcare workers predict whether patients may require emergency hospital admission, new study finds

[...] The study, of 4.6 million patients from 1985 to 2015, was conducted using linked electronic health records from the UK's Clinical Practice Research Datalink. A wide range of factors was taken into account, including age, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family history, lifestyle factors, comorbidities, medication and marital status, as well as the time since first diagnosis, last use of the health system and latest laboratory tests.

Using more variables combined with information about their timing, machine learning models were found to provide a more robust prediction of the risk of emergency hospital admission than any models used previously.

'Our findings show that with large datasets which contain rich information about individuals, machine learning models outperform one of the best conventional statistical models,' Rahimian said. 'We think this is because machine learning models automatically capture and 'learn' from interactions between the data that we were not previously aware of.'

Around here they ask a series of questions. Answer wrong and they can put you away for a week or two for "observation".
One of the questions is "Do you have any weapons in your house"
Later they can ask "Do you have any knives in your house"

The correct response to these types of questions is: Talk to my lawyer

Look I'm a certified Genius so I always do so quickly, and well into the negative numbers until they get bored and ask me to stop.

I'm heavily into both history as well as the news so I can recite many of America's presidents backwards as well.

In one hospital, a psych nurse clued in to that I could do all this so she simply asked me whether I was "oriented in time, space and identity".

    "What's that mean?"

"Do you know when you are, where you are and who you are?" This always tempts to me claim I'm Napoleon. Perhaps I'll try Donald Trump next.

However, it is ineffective to tell a cop that "I am oriented in time, space and identity". They don't actually know what that means themselves, so my saying it to law enforcement officers fails to yield joy.

Well, presenting oneself as an asshole (I am not talking about you, but in general) in difficult situations can be considered mental issue or a criminal one, can't it?

Healthy law abiding citizen supposed to respect medical and government authorities even if they are stupid because he knows the consequences. If he does not, he has to be taught or treated.

The most interesting example is probably Godel's US citizenship exam. It took Einstein to save him.

On December 5, 1947, Einstein and Morgenstern accompanied Gödel to his U.S. citizenship exam, where they acted as witnesses. Gödel had confided in them that he had discovered an inconsistency in the U.S. Constitution that could allow the U.S. to become a dictatorship. Einstein and Morgenstern were concerned that their friend's unpredictable behavior might jeopardize his application. The judge turned out to be Phillip Forman, who knew Einstein and had administered the oath at Einstein's own citizenship hearing. Everything went smoothly until Forman happened to ask Gödel if he thought a dictatorship like the Nazi regime could happen in the U.S. Gödel then started to explain his discovery to Forman. Forman understood what was going on, cut Gödel off, and moved the hearing on to other questions and a routine conclusion.

Because his paranoia led him to believe his hospital's staff was poisoning his food, so rather than being poisoned he preferred to starve to death despite his being a hospital patient.

Forgot to mention that this argument of mine was used during late Soviet times. Many opponents of the regime were locked up in mental institutions simply because "one must me mad to be an opponent of such a powerful and wonderful system" which is obviously close to truth. A diagnose was invented by scientists - mild schizophrenia.

Here opponents to "democracy and liberal values" are similarly called idiots; no mental treatment yet probably because it's too expensive.
