It's already one of the coldest and snowiest starts to the winter season in parts of the Northeast, Midwest and Plains, and we haven't finished November yet.
According to the Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index (AWSSI) from the Midwest Regional Climate Center, 74 cities from New England to the Plains and Rockies have seen an extreme season-to-date of cold and snow as of Nov. 27.

Cities categorized as having an extreme winter, so far, ranked in the 99th percentile of the index for Nov. 27.
A combination of persistent cold from the Northeast to the Plains and a pair of expansive winter storms, Avery and then Bruce, gave this winter season a fast start.
Solar cycle 24 was exceptionally weak and cycle 25 is shaping up to be similar. Some have predicted that, if the trend continues, Earth may experience a "mini ice age" soon due to increased cloud formation reflecting the warming light from the sun: https://astronomynow.com/2015/07/17/diminishing-solar-activity-may-bring-new-ice-age-by-2030/

Miserable start to winter, ehh? Is miserable a scientific term? There is nothing more miserable than temperatures within 10 degrees of freezing, and liquid precipitation falling from the sky. And, that's pretty much all I've known for the past 30 years in Arkansas, during the winter months. Sure, we've had a couple big freezes, and some ice storms, but mostly, it's wet and cold.
Give me a blizzard, with real snow instead of an ice storm. And, give me temps in the teens. Or even lower, that's fine. It's actually warmer in those conditions, than with liquid water trying to blow down your neck at 30 degrees.
I think this is pretty miserable reporting, TBH. It's nothing more than a human interest story, designed to trigger commiseration on the part of people (GenX, and millennials) who can't remember killer winter weather.

Thank you. I was about to post much the same thing and then I saw your post. It may be getting colder and snowier, but that doesn't make it more miserable.
I love winter, the more snow the better. "Miserable" is around freezing when you get cold sunny weather, then rain.

It's been great in the UK. Today is a warmish bright sunshine day. We had a week or so of real cold at the start of November, but that's it. I have not even had a frost on my car yet, though I live on the coast (20m from the sea) so that keeps the local air a little warmer.
So far all of October and November, apart from the odd big storm and heavy rainfall has been all bright sunshine and warm weather.
