ArsTechnica:

The hits just keep coming for the various Defenders series. Per Deadline Hollywood, Netflix announced this evening that it has canceled Daredevil, just weeks after the show concluded its critically acclaimed third season. This news shouldn't be too surprising, but this one is a particularly tough blow for fans.

Clearly Netflix is cleaning house, since this follows surprise cancellations in October of Iron Fist and Luke Cage. That just leaves Jessica Jones and The Punisher on Netflex's[sic] roster of Defenders. Both have new seasons in the pipeline that are currently slated to air on Netflix as planned, according to Deadline's sources. But they will, in all likelihood, be on the chopping block eventually as well.

Marvel/Disney may be planning to revive the Defender series on its upcoming streaming service.

As pointed out in other comments and if you do some research, you can confirm indeed it is Disney/ABC who is cleaning out their competition of Marvel series. The only reason Jessica Jones and Punisher have some episodes left is they were in production before Disney/Abc changed decided to take back their property. Netflix doesn't really have much say in the matter.

I am not a journalist, I did not go to school for writing, but this is some of the shoddiest writing and journalism there is by ArsTechnica when they include a single line describing the situation as it being Netflix who wants these actions to occur.

    Correct.

I and wife are both “theater” people. Tech and writer Looking at what these shows show was good quality. 13hr movie. Long arc planned and shows support the long goal. My wife went to them thing comic book crap... then was saw the good under pinning. Look to dr who or humans other English base shows show thus same long arc planning. Though current season dr who is crap by losing Davis. Bayalon 5 most dislike is another long arc show. It hard do that in the epilogic format. It is why quality was spotty.

Disney not care about quality any more. It is getting the cash out of purchase. Quaility or fans be damn. They may to place the actors under contract to do more shows but this all start to fall a part when the show runner for these shows left and joined Warner Brothers to try to DC out of its B movie quiality of shows.

In the end Disney is helping Wagner Brothers to support crap. I think the Thor actor is in his last movie with Averages 4, mainly because marvel near got to humanize the god. Thor plays well with hulk and others sincenear can carry a show by themselves. That same two sides of coin is in daredevil and me big. Even if they do not interact it shows the human and Everyman in the strucrugl. Damn Disney for killing this shows and hope the showed in the time of crap in TV. Like Agents of SHEILD

I've read in many places that Netflix has the contractual rights to make more Marvel-based shows.
I suspect, however, other things comes into play where it become too expensive to make more shows.
    E.g.
-How long can Netflix show past seasons?
e.g.: 2 years after they stop making shows?

-How much do the actors want for compensation?
Each season is said the contracts are negotiated as if each season was a long movie, not a TV series.

-It is said that for each season, Netflix must negotiate with Marvel/Disney for a license.
Imagine if the more successful the Netflix show is, the more valuable the license is.
The better the show, the more money Marvel/Disney wants.
(PS: I know this conflicts with my first line but I have seen both sides mentioned)

No wonder they pulled the plug.

I thought Ars was just another news aggregatgor. Their "articles" usually contain just as much content as the summary does here, if even that much.
