Verizon takes aim at Tumblr's kneecaps, bans all adult content

Oath, the Verizon subsidiary that owns the Yahoo and AOL digital media brands, has announced that as of December 17, all adult content will be banned from the Tumblr blogging site. Any still or moving images displaying real-life human genitals or female nipples and any content—even drawn or computer-generated artwork—depicting any sexual acts will be prohibited.

Genitals and female nipples will only be permitted within the context of breastfeeding, childbirth, and in health-related subjects such as gender confirmation surgery. Written erotica will also remain on the site.

Nowadays, pornography represents a substantial element of Tumblr's content. A 2013 estimate said that around 11 percent of the site's 200,000 most-visited domains were porn, and some 22 percent of inbound links were from adult sites.

I read a comment to a similar question on Reddit where someone from one of those investigation websites said that what they, drug markets and other "bad people" do is have certain SFW seed images/blog posts/whatever depending on the site. People then like or comment or whatever that post, then you know they have what you are looking for. In the case of a ban, you just create a new account/website/whatever and just interact with the seed again. You then work your way through the web and it is trivial to reenter as long as you remember at least one active seed or node in the network and new seeds and node pop up as they are replaced.

Now note, it is possible for tumblr to actually clean up a large amount what they don't want by doing a network analysis and destroying as many seeds and nodes as they can at once to prevent the network from routing around damage. If they made it too difficult, people would move on to an easier place. But as it stands, they don't want to put in the actual hard work required, so they just ban all the NSFW, even though, as mentioned earlier, that won't stop anything.
