Phys.org:

General Motors has announced it's shuttering five production facilities and killing six vehicle platforms by the end of 2019 as it reallocates resources towards self-driving technologies and electric vehicles.

[...] North American car production hit 17.5 million vehicles in 2016, and dropped marginally to 17.2 million in 2017. Interesting, but perhaps not significant.

More telling are changes in driver behaviour. In North America, for example, fewer teens are getting driver's licences. In 1983, 92 per cent of teens were licensed, while by 2014, that number had dropped to 77 per cent. In Germany, the number of new licences issued to drivers aged 17 to 25 has dropped by 300,000 over the last 10 years.

Are we over our love affair with cars?

Millennials aren't bothering to get driving licences because they are now using their parents as a taxi service well into their twenties.

Ding. Ding. We have a winner. Two of my kids did not get their license right away when they were able. Instead, they sponged rides off their friends or myself. One of my employees is dating a guy in college who has his grandmother shuttle him to school and work every single day. I have a sixteen year old son who has his license and is dating a 17 year old girl who cannot drive yet. She finished driver's training but let her permit expire rather than take the test. She has no current plans to re-earn her permit.

In my state, a 17-year-old holder of a learner's permit whose parents are not licensed drivers would have no way to complete the mandatory 50 hours of supervised driving. A nonparent in the front passenger's seat for practice driving on a learner's permit is forbidden until the holder of the learner's permit turns 18.
