Arthur T Knackerbracket has found the following story:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has overseen a test of a new hypersonic missile, declaring that the weapon is impossible to intercept and will guarantee the country's security over the coming decades.

Speaking to Russia's military top brass on Wednesday after watching the live feed of the launch of the Avangard system from the defence ministry's control room, Putin said the test was a "great success" and an "excellent New Year's gift to the nation".

According to the Kremlin, the missile was launched from the Dombarovskiy missile base in the southern Ural Mountains and hit its target on a test site in Kamchatka, about 6,000km away.

[...] When first presenting it, the Russian president said the new missile system has an intercontinental range and can fly in the atmosphere at 20 times the speed of sound, bypassing the enemy's missile defence. He emphasised that no other country currently has hypersonic weapons.

Let's remember that one of the most-feared Soviet fighter planes turned out be a huge gas-hog, close to useless, and heavy because they made it of STEEL! It could go Mach2 briefly, but that required engine replacement. And it didn't need the output from an oil well, it required the output of a whole oil field. There's a big difference between a research project and a useable weapon.

I've not read this FA, but the one I read a couple of days ago had a link to an official vid of the demonstration of this new hypersonic rocket. It showed a launch vehicle taking off. No change of direction, just up. No indication of its payload carrying capability, no indication of any payload at all, in particular one that would have an alternative drive mechanism, as that rocket certainly wasn't going to do all the Machs claimed. And certainly no hitting of any target.

'grat's Vlad - you're now where Elon was years ago.

Note - that doesn't mean I don't take the Russian war machine as a threat - they're fricken' 200km from here, for pity's sake.

      Point of order

At Mach 20, an actual 'payload' is unnecessary.
