Netflix has issued a warning to its customers thanks to a meme challenge that has gone viral in which people are choosing to put blindfolds on and navigate the world around them just like the characters in the horror movie “Bird Box.”

[...] For those who spent the holidays visiting friends and not watching Netflix, here’s a quick summary. Netflix released a horror concept movie called Bird Box starring Sandra Bullock. In Bird Box, Bullock and her children, Boy and Girl, are forced to wear blindfolds and navigate a river and spooky forest to protect themselves against the evil monster that, if seen, causes people to kill themselves.

The movie not only broke viewership records, it inspired a bevy of #BirdBoxChallenge memes, including ones in which folks record themselves blindfolded and attempting to do complete tasks, many of which are depicted in the movie.

Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.

— Netflix US (@netflix) January 2, 2019

Of course, these videos aren’t staying tucked away. They’re being shared with the world on social media. One viral meme shows a blindfolded family paddling away in their bathtub. Another shows a family running through their living room and one managing to hit the wall instead. There are numerous videos of random people walking blindfolded in cities like New York because sure, why not. One person put a hat over his head while driving.

Apparently rooting for people just trying to have some fun to be hurt/killed is acceptable to this community? I get a "dnc" vibe from the comments too, so this is really about some political purge?

Comrade, this is possibly the dumbest attempt to shoehorn in a political agenda to a topic where there is none.

Many are not trying to have fun but to "go viral" by any means possible.

Someone should do a study of people who did go viral to see if it had any lasting impact, either positive or negative.

You almost had a point, but you ruined it. Now back to rooting for a safe and fun Darwin Award competition.

    Ummmm...just having fun?

I'm wishing the movie had shown people climbing mountains blind-folded: maybe more stupid sheeple would die.

Actually, I REALLY wish the original concept of Mr Robot had taken off better and many huge corporations had been taken down and executives had gone to jail. Instead, we have idiots taking tide pod challenges and hurting themselves being sheeple doing what EVERYONE else in the herd is doing.

    GET A LIFE, PEOPLE....stop being a sheeple!

      climbing mountains blind-folded

Been there, done that. Groups of two, one blind-folded, the other not.

In case you're wondering, it's a helluva lot easier being the blind-folded guy, than the sighted guy. It can be a helluva spiritual experience though. Doing it on your own without a partner would probably be even more spiritual, as in, "you'll soon be joining your ancestors" spiritual.

OH!! WAIT!!! Did it another time too, how could I forget? Was elected (or drafted) to the Order of the Arrow. We arrived after dark, at the foot of the mountain. Blindfolds, tethers, maintain silence, stay in line, we're going to the top of the mountain. And, I knew NO ONE!! The only reason I had to trust the people around me was - Scouts.

It's a lot easier to film yourself eating tide pods or jumping out [cbsnews.com] of a moving car [businessinsider.com], than it is to develop better-than-script-kiddie skills and hack into a Fortune 500 company (only to be hounded by police [wikipedia.org]).

You know what's really fun? Sticking needles in your eyes. I've never had so much fun in my whole life. You should definitely try it!

I'm getting a DNR [wikipedia.org] vibe from those folks myself. Just sayin'.
