Bloomberg:

Most people don’t turn on their car’s headlights and think, I wish they were brighter. Shuji Nakamura is not most people.

The Nobel Prize-winning illumination scientist has spent the past five years developing a laser-based lighting system. His company, SLD Laser, says the new design is 10 times brighter than today’s LED lights, capable of illuminating objects a kilometer away while using less power than any current technology. And unlike a regular, dumb headlight, the laser can potentially be integrated into current and forthcoming driver-assistance systems.

Do headlights need to be brighter?

Due to the growing number of sparkly laser installations that I've seen in clubs, bars, outside of cell phone stores, in outdoor shopping malls, in nature gatherings, etc., I am going to be wearing laser protection glasses all the time while out in public areas. It's so bad that anyone can just buy a high-powered laser installation, point it into crowds at eye level, and nothing is done about it, unless a concerned individual says something. There are no public warnings, no rules or regulations, it's just out there...

Laser protection glasses are just tinted plastic. the glasses you use to shield yourself from that inconceivably bright nuisance of a light source that relentlessly beams down from the noon sky like a bloody celestial fusion reactor will work just fine. The hairy flap of skin hinged at the corners of each eye is pretty good at blocking exposure in a pinch, as is any opaque object placed on the line between your eyes and the source; the spindly meaty bit stuck at the end of the typical arm will suffice, whether yours or one you have found. (warn: though good at blocking collimated light, found limbs may pose secondary hazards, ymmv)
