IBM hopes 1 million faces will help fight bias in facial recognition
IBM thinks the data being used to train facial recognition systems isn't diverse enough.
The tech giant released a trove of data containing 1 million images of faces taken from a Flickr dataset with 100 million photos and videos.
The images are annotated with tags related to features including craniofacial measurements, facial symmetry, age and gender.
Researchers at the company hope that these specific details will help developers train their artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition systems to identify faces more fairly and accurately.
And then the police adopted the new facial recognition algorithms and everyone lived happily ever after.

Facial recognition can already recognize old white dudes. Facial Recognition Is Accurate, if You’re a White Guy [nytimes.com]
The purpose of this training data is to make it able to recognize old non-white-dudes.

No one is worried about the old non-white-dudes. Even the women stop worrying about the old dudes, no matter what color. All of us old dudes look alike. Gray facial hair, gray or graying top hair, if we still have top hair. Whiter guys have faded to some indeterminate brownish color, blacker guys fade to some indeterminate brownish color, and brown guys are still indeterminately brown. Most of us stoop a little, if we don't actually slouch. Seriously, I've sat with a bunch of old bastards, in various locations, and looked around, wondering which might be black, white, or brown.
In fact, I've had a couple ocassions when there was a female in the mix of old people, and it took awhile to figure that out! No bullshit - I sat in a restaurant in a little South Carolina town, listening to the conversation among 8 or 9 old people, whom I assumed to all be males. Maybe fifteen minutes passed, before one old person addressed another by name, with a feminine name. I had to study her for a bit, and actually listen to her, before I caught enough cues to decide that she was 90%+ certain to be female.

Dude, that's not your brain leaking. Remember your Mama explaining that you had "water on the brain"? Well, the brain dissolved, long ago, and you urinated it away. Now, it's just the water leaking out. Stay calm, and assume whatever position results in the least water leakage, while I call a plumber for you.

Amazing what you can learn about a person through the ways they try and insult you.
I guess "shit for brains" was too solid a metaphor for you? Glad I didn't grow up with a mother like yours!
