I fully intend to spend my twilight years relaxing in relative safety while the car drives me around; I'm gonna be torqued if they take too long.

The mobile electronics sector kept doubling performance while decreasing price, while desktop PCs stalled. Why? because the PC can't be locked down without messing a lot with legacy stuff, while mobile is by design a surveillance device.
Now, a huge amount of funds is dedicated to the development of self driving vehicles, instead of devoting it to assist meatbags and make the ride more ergonomic (smarter suspensions on trucks would help a lot), instead of devoting it to public transport infrastructure and make the car a fun hobby again.
Why? because the same tech that makes cars autonomous can make mobile army units/drones that will render police forces obsolete. Once that happens you will wish skynet had happened instead, because an AI gone solo is still better than AI in the hand of the incumbents that brought to you the wonders of needless wars and needless global debt.
