Five Reasons are provided by the U.K. DailyMail on why we won't be seeing autonomous cars take over any time soon.

SNOW AND WEATHER

[...] Heavy snow, rain, fog and sandstorms can obstruct the view of cameras. Light beams sent out by laser sensors can bounce off snowflakes and think they are obstacles.

Radar can see through the weather, but it doesn't show the shape of an object needed for computers to figure out what it is.

[...] PAVEMENT LINES AND CURBS

Across the globe, roadway marking lines are different, or they may not even exist. Lane lines aren't standardized, so vehicles have to learn how to drive differently in each city.

[...] DEALING WITH HUMAN DRIVERS

For many years, autonomous vehicles will have to deal with humans who don't always play by the rules.

[...] LEFT TURNS

Deciding when to turn left in front of oncoming traffic without a green arrow is one of the more difficult tasks for human drivers and one that causes many crashes. Autonomous vehicles have the same trouble.

[...] CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE

The fatal Uber crash near Phoenix last year did more than push the pause button on testing.

It also rattled consumers who someday will be asked to ride in self-driving vehicles.

Surveys taken after the Uber crash showed that drivers are reluctant to give up control to a computer.

I fully intend to spend my twilight years relaxing in relative safety while the car drives me around; I'm gonna be torqued if they take too long.

For a while, I suppose a lot of people will die in crashes as people and AI's share the road. Then enough innocent people will die this way that some enterprising politician will use it as a platform to get into office and laws will start to go into effect "banning the manual steering of a motorized vehicle on public roads".

Trouble is that only works for motor vehicles, there are also pedestrians, cyclists, dogs, horses, etc. on the road, all legitimately. This is the real barrier to most automation attempts on the road - take controlled junctions: sure you can get all the cars to talk to each other and decide in milliseconds who goes when, then ban the cars that don't conform, then get rid of the lights - but then how do other road users use the junction?

Self driving cars/trucks etc. will only really work when you build totally separate road systems for them and everything else - and most places there isn't room to do that.

Very special road, it's called Expressway. Also known as Turnpike. We have some magnificent ones in New York. Bruckner Expressway, I-278, Cross Bronx Expressway, Trans-Manhattan Expressway, P.I.P., Lincoln Tunnel Expressway, B.Q.E. Actually, avoid the B.Q.E. at all costs. That one is a disaster. Thank you, Robert Moses (RIP!!).

How about using all the money and construction materials for a wall on fixing our broken infrastructure instead?

So many times, Congress tells me what to spend the money on. Instead of letting me decide. What I'd love to have is the account where they put the money in. And I do whatever I want with it. We call it the Slush Fund. And it would solve many problems!!!
