Earlier this month, a long kept list of Ph.D. scientists who “dissent from Darwinism” reached a milestone — it crossed the threshold of 1,000 signers.
“There are 1,043 scientists on the ‘A Scientific Dissent from Darwinism’ list. It passed the 1,000 mark this month,” said Sarah Chaffee, a program officer for the Discovery Institute, which maintains the list.
“A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism” is a simple, 32-word statement that reads: “We are skeptical of claims for the ability of random mutation and natural selection to account for the complexity of life. Careful examination of the evidence for Darwinian theory should be encouraged.”

The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins is a very good popular science book on the subject. There's also one aimed at children called The Magic of Reality. These "skeptics" are not sceptical. They're deniers. Unfortunately we live in increasingly ignorant times. Stupid is very much in fashion.

So, enlighten us. What period of time in human history was least ignorant?

My guess? 1970-ies.
May not have been more technologically advanced, but they hold fewer dogma against science.

Good enough, for a guess. But, I lived through the seventies. There were tons of ignorance, on every subject imaginable. For instance, the average American can't find the 20 best-known and/or largest nations on a map of the world. Survey after survey demonstrates the ignorance of the common man, and that is generally seen as funny. Ancient technologies like fire are poorly understood by that common man. What is the fire triangle? "Isn't that someplace on a volcanic island out in the ocean?"

Ignorance is less of an issue than the pretension of "my ignorance is as good as your science".
Which is not such big of a problem as, for example, a (fictive) position of "Australia can be on the other side of the world, because they would fall down" being aggressively promoted as "the truth" (or "the I believe in, which is as good as your 'Earth is round' truth".
