Considering that the premise of Altered Carbon is about people who can change into different bodies called "sleeves," it makes sense that some of the characters from season 1 will have new faces.

Anthony Mackie -- best known for his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in Captain America: Civil War and the Avengers movies -- will play the lead character, mercenary Takeshi Kovacs. Actor Joel Kinnaman originally played the character in season 1.

Simone Missick -- who played Detective Misty Knight in the Netflix Marvel shows The Defenders, Luke Cage and Iron Fist -- joins as the character Trepp.

Dina Shihabi, who played Neda Kazemi in Daredevil, is a new character named Dig 301.

Will the erstwhile Marvel actors augment the show, or drag it down?

    Spoilers!

If they're going to take Altered Carbon even further, there are some issues that may arise from the fact that they merged Quellcrist Falconer and Virginia Vidaura, who are completely distinct characters in the books and appear together in Woken Furies (Book 3).

I don't think writing Vidura out of it would be a big deal - you'd expect some characters and storylines to be merged/dropped in a TV adaptation (or Kovacs' internal dialogues would have ended up with a Dramatis Personae longer than the main cast...)

What would complicate that storyline is that the TV version has Quell being Kovacs' long-lost lover - they'd both quickly work out who was who - rather than someone who died a century or so before he was born (and who he never - knowingly - actually shows any romantic interest in) ... However, she's also replaced Kovacs' primary love-Maguffin Sarah (?) who was conveniently RD's in reel one of the TV show, so if they get that far I guess Book 3 will start with Kovacs specifically searching for Quell rather than Sarah.

The bigger problem is the major changes they've made to the backstory, completely flipping the Envoys from the Protectorate's elite enforcers to Quell's revolutionary/terrorist army (seriously? she'd have won and the story would be over 200 years before it started). The plot of Broken Angels pretty much relies on Kovacs being an amoral mercenary out to protect himself and whoever he's currently recruited to his "team" - fucking over the Quellists and the entire population of a city doesn't really fit if he's a hero of the (failed) revolution still carrying a torch for Quell.

Then there are more subtle universe-breaking changes - like easy 3D-printing of new biological bodies and super-powered synthetic sleeves that even prostitutes can afford (c.f. synths still being a very poor substitute in book 3, decades after the original book and following a tech revolution triggered by the events of book 2).
