Phys.org:

The world's forests are increasingly taking up more carbon, partially offsetting the carbon being released by the burning of fossil fuels and by deforestation in the tropics, according to a new study.

The findings, published in the journal Biogeosciences, suggest that forests are growing more vigorously, and therefore, locking away more carbon. Even so, the concentration of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is still on the rise.

[...] The increased plant growth in global forests could be due to several factors, including higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, warmer temperatures and increased availability of nitrogen.

Perhaps we should re-forest the deserts of the world.

Purchase a box of toothpicks at the Dollar Store. Round or flat, It's All Good.

Poke three equally spaced toothpicks in your pit.

Place the toothpicks atop a jar or glass of water, with the pit half submerged in water.

Place in a window. It doesn't really need direct sunlight.

After a few weeks you'll have a little tree a foot and a half tall. Hold it up in a flowerpot then sift potting soil around the roots. Keep the soil most but not wet.

Avocados need moderate to warm weather; there's one growing in Santa Cruz that's thriving. If you live in a Northern Clime, start a few trees then make a southerly road trip.

Lots of railroad tracks parallel country roads. Keep an eye our for where there's already some other plants growing, as there will be water there. Plant an adolescent avocado then drive on a few miles.

Avocado take sixty years to mature. I've only just started growing them but am counting on advances in medicine - as well as somehow finding it within myself to get off my fat hairy ass so as to exercise - to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

    Get This:

A typical ten year old tree has sequestered one ton of carbon!

A _mature_ Avocado tree though, that's likely ten tons, maybe more!

    Good Times.
