CNet:

Review site Rotten Tomatoes is instituting some changes, leading many to believe it's responding to the recent controversy over the site's Captain Marvel page. But Paul Yanover, president of Fandango, which owns the site, told CNET that's not the whole story.

In case you were snapped away by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, and thus missed the recent controversy, here's a recap. Captain Marvel doesn't come out until March 8, but users were already leaving negative comments about the film on Rotten Tomatoes, a process dubbed "review bombing." Many recent comments seemed to come from those who are angry at star Brie Larson.

The movie review site has removed users' ability to leave reviews or to indicate they are not interested in seeing a film [EDIT: before it comes out].

Triggered misogynists shitpost on site, site adjusts policies. Not much else to say.

Seriously now, calling for my diversity is not the same thing as discrimination. It is the height of white privilege to feel discriminated when no such thing is occurring. I bet if Rotten Tomatoes had a public relations office it would be filled with assholes wanting to talk to the manager.

"What I'm looking for is to bring more seats up to the table," Larson said. "No one is getting their chair taken away. There's not less seats at the table, there's just more seats at the table."

But that's not how some interpreted it.

"Larson has made it clear ... men need not attend this movie," read one comment left on Rotten Tomatoes before the changes. Another wrote, "I somehow feel that (the Captain Marvel Skrull characters) are not the enemy, but that I am, since Brie (Larson) has been careful to state she doesn't want the press tour to include types like me."

    Talk about insecurity, gotDAMN!

The quoted comment is her backtracking. Here's one of her original comments:

[Audiences] are not allowed enough chances to read public discourse on these films by the people that the films were made for. I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work for him about [A] Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what it meant to women of color, to biracial women, to teen women of color, to teens that are biracial.

She is making it clear that white males need not see or review these woke films. But somehow you are "insecure" if you refuse to blow $15 to see a movie associated with this kind of rhetoric.

That is not what those words mean, but your interpretation of it does mean you are insecure.

The targeted demographics for superhero stories used to be young white men. The demographics are changing and so media is changing along with it. She obviously cares more about the historically under served crowds and is tired of middle aged white guys shitting on things because it doesn't meet their expectations.

Perhaps your opinions are 100% valid and not based in misogyny or racism, but if you've paid attention you'll notice a distinct trend in criticisms of recent movies such as Ghostbusters. It is not surprising in the least that a corporate site would want to limit a tsunami of racist/misogynist shitposting.

Not watching another cookie cutter superhero movie does not make you insecure, but shitposting because the creators are trying to reach a different demographic?? Yaaa, get bent and wake me when there is actual discrimination to worry about.

If you are an old white dude, and you criticize A Wrinkle in Time, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, etc., then your opinion does not matter. That is an accurate interpretation of what she said. She may have softened her publicly expressed views since, but it is what she really believes.

It is fine if she supports minorities reviewing films, not that they need her support. The doors are wide open with sites like Facebook and YouTube allowing anybody to act like Roger Ebert. The people involved in press tours are sycophants anyway.

So? The film (and the book for that matter) was aimed at younger people. Some may not like that Disney made the family in the story bi-racial, but I've never paid attention to stuff like that if it didn't detract from a story.

I don't think she intended to say that white males need to be excluded, and her clarification confirms this. She said that there needs to be more reviews from the demographics of the target audience. I'm a sci-fi geek; should I give a damn whether some reviewer who likes artsy-fartsy films likes a sci-fi movie or not? I can't count the number of movies that got poor reviews that I went and enjoyed. I still remember a TV Guide reviewer complaining about Tim Russ' "wooden and emotionless" portrayal of Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager.

If you don't want to go see those movies, then don't. Quit trying to tell me that I shouldn't because you're butthurt about your misinterpretation of what some actress said. Stupid battle of the sexes; makes my ass tired.

Now it seems to be working and most of the feedback is negative, which is to be expected.

Women are a lot of good things, but being funny and being Thor are not two of them. There's a saying, "garbage-in, garbage-out" that applies fully to Female Thor and Ghostbusters. If the idea is fundamentally stupid or inane then it will be difficult to take seriously, and then you will just be smiling and nodding like a cowardly yes-man because your date dragged you into it and enjoyed it and you're just trying to get in her pants. " HAHA. HA. " Woo-woo, " you flaccidly cheer, when the strong woman punches the dumb White man for looking at her the wrong way.

The only way the former would have succeeded is to make it a superhero parody film (could be easily accomplished) and the only the latter would have succeeded is to find funnier women and writers (difficult but doable).

    "Triggered misogynists?"

That doesn't seem to be the case. While this controversy swirls about Captain Marvel and Brie Larson Alita Battle Angel, another action film with a female protagonist, is being well-received by fans and is doing well. So, if there's a great misogynist wave of trolls out there trying to keep women in film down, then how is it that one such is being buoyed while the other is being panned? Could it be that the one that's being panned is helmed by obnoxious jerks who are attacking a huge chunk of the audience that they want to fork over their cash to see their movie?

I'd also point out that there have been many, many action/sci-fi films led by strong women characters (Tomb Raider, Aliens, Underworld, Hunger Garmes, Wonder Woman, etc) that have been very successful, very well-received by your so-called "triggered misogynists."

Here's a thought: actual misogyny is a nearly extinct mindset whose last, fading embers smolder in the breasts of octogenarian Baby Boomers; the rest of us in the world prefer movies that don't suck and for companies and holier-than-thou actors to not categorically insult swathes of the intended audience.

If you were insulted by her words then you are an easily triggered idiot. They were not great words and reflect poorly on her but were hardly on the same level as the racism and misogyny that got directed at Ghostbusters.

There is some mix of anti-pc brigaders and actual misogynists and the phenomena is very tied to the current political climate. It isn'tabout some massive plot to keep women down, it is about insecure white males feeling marginalized because centuries long racism/sexism is finally being discussed and pushed back in the open.

Keep calling people triggered idiots for not supporting racist misandrists like Brie Larson. The real ones to be triggered will be the studio execs once they calculate how much Brie Larson lost them.
