Amazon is reportedly planning a new, low-cost grocery chain

Amazon is reportedly planning to open dozens of grocery stores in major US cities, which will be under different branding from its Whole Foods chain. The first location may open in Los Angeles before the end of this year, while it's signed leases for at least two other stores, according to Wall Street Journal sources.

[...] Amazon already has a grocery delivery service, and the reported chain would expand its retail footprint beyond Whole Foods, 4-Star stores and self-service Amazon Go outlets. It's not clear whether the planned stores will also be cashierless, though the report suggests they'll have a strong focus on customer service and pick-up options.

If Amazon can undercut Aldi around here then I'll be impressed. The local stores were all remodeled in the last few years and the produce section expanded--produce quality is surprisingly good now. The stores are still small, easy to get in and out quickly without walking a mega store. Examples: avocados about half the price of other supermarkets and almost always good, this isn't common here in Great Lakes region. The premium Aldi house brand ice cream (choc & van only) is really tasty, nearly half the price of Breyers.

When Amazon crashes in the low price grocery biz, I just hope they don't buy Aldi and kill this goose that lays golden eggs.

The article says that the new stores will be 35,000 sq. ft. ALDI is closer to half of that [google.com], which results in a more streamlined selection of products, etc. I'll be surprised if anybody beats ALDI in the short term on anything but some loss leader items.

Publix has the best store brand ice creams I can remember, especially the Black Swamp Raspberry Cheesecake one.

The only time I got ice cream from ALDI is when they were clearing out the Christmas-themed peppermint bark one in December for like $0.75/1.5q. And it was good.

No Publix here...but we have Wegmans if you want a wide selection and friendly people (often wins "best place to work" award).
