U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
All the bad press about Facebook might be catching up to the company. New numbers from Edison Research show an an estimated 15 million fewer users in the United States compared to 2017. The biggest drop is in the very desirable 12- to 34-year-old group. Marketplace Tech got a first look at Edison's latest social media research. It revealed almost 80 percent of people in the U.S. are posting, tweeting or snapping, but fewer are going to Facebook. Marketplace's Kimberly Adams talked with Larry Rosin, president of Edison Research.
[...] Adams: But if we look at Facebook's earnings report, they are still reporting an increasing number of active users. What's behind the difference between what the company is saying and what your survey found?
Rosin: When they're producing those numbers, they're typically talking about their global platform. This is a survey just of the USA. Furthermore, we're asking about usage. We're saying, "Do you currently use Facebook?" Facebook is probably measuring it on, "Do you ever open the app, or do you ever use it on any level?"

The Facebook app (which came pre-installed on my phone) is disabled, and the Messenger app was never installed. Hopefully disabling the app is enough to stop it. (I should really root my phone and remove it for real, but I don't feel like risking bricking it and needing another phone.)
Of course, I'm a curmudgeon, so not exactly FB's target market; I doubt that they care they've lost me.

On my tasty Google Pixel 3 XL, it only comes with Google apps preinstalled. No Facebook -- not even disabled, just not there.
With no third party apps, I can feel safe that nobody might be spying on me.
Ignorance only SEEMS like bliss. But hey, it requires less effort.

Blackberry has an app in the app store called DTEK that I think you can install on any android device.
It monitors apps and when an app accesses something (your location, your contact list, etc) it will log an event. You can then review what apps are using what permissions and how frequently.
That's how I found out that the weather network app polled my location 1000's of times per day.

I lied. I think it's only available on blackberry Andoid phones. It's too bad. It's a really useful app.
