GWX redux? Microsoft to start nagging Windows 7 users about upcoming EOL.

Making the transition to Windows 10 and Office 365

After 10 years, support for Windows 7 is coming to an end on January 14, 2020, with Office 2010 following shortly thereafter.  We are here to help you with recommendations for what to do next and answer questions that you may have about end of support.

End of support means that your Windows 7 or Office 2010 software will no longer receive updates, including security updates. But, there's good news – Windows 10 is the most secure Windows ever and Office 365 delivers the latest in personal productivity. Together they make a perfect pair to help you do everything you were doing before – safer, faster and easier.

To help our customers get advanced notice of this change, we are reaching out with information and resources. Beginning next month, if you are a Windows 7 customer, you can expect to see a notification appear on your Windows 7 PC. This is a courtesy reminder that you can expect to see a handful of times in 2019. By starting the reminders now, our hope is that you have time to plan and prepare for this transition. These notifications are designed to help provide information only and if you would prefer not to receive them again, you'll be able to select an option for "do not notify me again," and we will not send you any further reminders. Just as software has changed over the years, so has hardware. To learn more about the latest line-up of modern PCs and information for moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10, just click on the "learn more" button on the notification.

If you want to get started today, you can visit www.microsoft.com/windows7 to find out more.

Indeed. Canonical is missing out on yet another fine opportunity to make some money. The silence from them, however, is deafening. I guess they've taken on to many "former" microsofters in key positions inside the company. Once they're inside the perimiter the only route is downward. Maybe Canonical can be the first to break out, I do hope so, but they'd have to at least show an effort for that to happen. C'mon, Canonical, get moving on this.

No, recently, see nokia, the strategy is ICE infiltrate, cripple, extinguish.
      Old as Eden, btw.

Way older than Eden. That was, what, 6Kya? Humans have been around in roughly our present form for at least an order of magnitude longer than that. I'm sure if you study even chimps long enough you'll find some sneaky little bastards...

          > Humans have been around in roughly our present form for at least an order of magnitude longer than that
This is orthogonal, not in opposition to the age of Eden. I'm not very interested in meatbags'(de)evolution but I must point out that if the bible does not talk about incestuous encounters at the time of adam and eve (and the bible does not shy away from such details, as you know), so it is possible that there were already other racially compatible humans. They were not "man" and "woman", whatever that means in terms of self awareness and knowing good from evil. Of course this theory is not meant to make the bible fit with scientific theories, it's mere speculation for who considers the scriptures actually sacred.

If any free software group may recommend a good alternative to Win7, Ubuntu advocates should NOT be the one. Ubuntu is worse in configuration than Win10, and sticking with GTK solutions is even worse - GTK always evolved on the "don't-be" principle. First, it was "Don't be MOTIF". Then, "Don't be WxWidgets". Then "Don't be Qt". As a result, customizations became more and more difficult, sometimes requiring deep modification of a source code, and sometimes even literally preventing users from customizing using X automation tools (famous unusable "Open file" dialog in which you have to click through all directories instead of quickly typing them with autocomplete). Finally, the computer becomes something like these 32kB digital diaries, where it's just not feasible to manage files as the interface requires you to type-in a cheat code and play Arkanoid with computer to select a file.
So we come to the situation in which customization is so small that Ubuntu should ship with a 500-page, 1970s-like, cloth-covered book with title "The only acceptable ways to do simple things in our system".
There are lots of good Linux distros and desktops out there, there are lots of BSDs with filesystems which can run really lightning-fast on a 16GB RAM workstation (no, BSD is NOT a server-only system which requires at least 64GB, it can be tuned down), finally there are forks of forks of modifications of user-customizable desktop environments which allow better productivity by using workflows which can be configured by user.

And... Is MS doing the nagware thing again? Did they learn from systems restarting or displaying ads during presentations (including their own presentations), diagnostics, medical operations or controlling a nuclear reactor? :).

Have you used the latest Ubuntu LTS? 18.04 is just crap. Yes, the 16.04 interface was iffy, but it worked. NFI what is going on down there.
