Christchurch shootings at two mosques leave 49 dead, Australian arrested in relation to terror attack

At least one gunman with a semi-automatic weapon attacked worshippers gathering for Friday prayers in two locations: a mosque at Deans Avenue in central Christchurch and another mosque in the nearby suburb of Linwood.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed one of the people taken into custody was an Australian-born citizen.

The ABC has identified Grafton man Brenton Tarrant as the man visible in livestreamed footage of the attack.
...
Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found on a nearby vehicle, but defence force officers disarmed one and are still working on disarming the second.

El Grauniad - Rightwing extremist wrote manifesto before livestreaming Christchurch shooting

The man who livestreamed himself attacking a Christchurch mosque and murdering at least 40 people identified himself online before the rampage as Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant.

On a now-deleted Twitter account, Tarrant posted multiple photos of what appear to be machine gun magazines and a link to what is being described as a manifesto for his actions.

The 74-page document starts off quoting a Dylan Thomas poem, Do not go gentle into that good night, and then moves onto a rant about white genocide.

Tarrant outlines his motivations: including to “create an atmosphere of fear” and to “incite violence” against Muslims while offering up autobiographical details.

As all good nutjubs he needs a manifesto. As far as recent once go his ain't bad, it's fairly short and he seem to be somewhat on point and it doesn't appear to be a massive cut-n-paste-job like the one that Breivik produced as he tries to explain his world views and what needs to be done according to him. As a summary it seems that if only all the muslims go back to the middle east and know their place he is going to be cool with that.

That said he is clearly not on the level of Ted Kaczynski as far as manifestos goes, comparing the two you can see the difference between an educated thinking mind and one that isn't firing on all cylinder.

I would agree that there are interesting aspects in it. If anything really drags it down it's his little Q&A session, I assume he is trying to be funny or just taking the piss out of people alternatively he is trying to speak with his target audience (young people and internet trolls?). I would say that is probably true. A possible reason could be that they are usually against the system and the press is part of the system so the press is not about to print the manifesto of some mass-murderer and at the same time tell all their readers/viewers that this guy has some solid points in his reasoning. Another one could quite frankly be the level of education, as an example Kaczynski was an educated genius while these newer once has at best been written by mediocre high school graduates (or equivalent) that have no experience in writing or composing a longer supportive text with a clear line of reasoning from start to finish. Instead you get these cut-n-paste word-processed hatchet jobs where there really isn't much of a filter between thought and what gets pushed out via the keyboard, there isn't much time spent thinking about it and probably not any actual rewrites, so it comes of as rambling by comparison -- or in some cases they actually are just ramblings.

I have to say this one is. I've read Elliot Rodger's manifesto, and it was much more coherent than this piece. I was surprised that George Soros wasn't mentioned. He did talk about the "resurrected Knights Templar" and "Knight Justiciar Breivik" giving him "the blessing for this attack".

MSM will be sure to try to link it with Trump, who got a brief mention. Some of the partisan trash here is already running off on those lines.

"But I have only had brief contact with Knight Justiciar Breivik, receiving a blessing for my mission after contacting his brother knights."

If I'm reading this correctly he claims to have been in contact with Breivik, even tho only briefly. Basically he would have to have been penpals with Anders? And he isn't on some kind of watch-list after that? Or should that be interpreted as the brother knights on behalf of Breivik sanctioning it? Either way it brings up this Knights Templar idea or fantasy. Breivik wrote a fair bit about it and claimed to be part of it but I guess it was always assumed that it was mostly a complete fabrication and part of his own imagination. So shared fantasies or actual people?

I understood out of that, that he contacted some people who called themselves the Knights Templar, who put him in contact with Breivik, and the two then phoned/wrote each other.

Norway may have been honoring Breivik's (and this guy's) privacy, but intelligence agencies are probably going to have some questions and "suggestions" to the Norwegian prison service.

What I found very interesting is that NZ police is asking the footage of the attack not to be shared online:

Police are aware there is extremely distressing footage relating to the incident in Christchurch circulating online ... We would strongly urge that the link not be shared. We are working to have any footage removed.

According to some other stuff i read (WaPo?) NZ police is also warning that sharing this footage may be illegal. Even the manifesto, which looorg suspects won't be up forever, is probably going to suffer a similar fate.

I have a message for NZ police, when it comes to this narrow issue: fuck you. You don't want disturbing footage to be "shared" via social media? Then make a goddamn web library of disturbing footage on your own servers, at taxpayer's expense, and let us (the public) share unoffensive links to that library. Actually, if people knew you and/or some journalist outlet are hosting this stuff, they wouldn't be sharing jack in the first place. They are resorting to the social media because the rest of the media is blacking it out. I don't believe we can have an honest and informed discussion about white nazi terrorism when sharing documentary footage is against the law. I understand all that monkey see monkey do reasoning, but I am not buying it. This ship has sailed the moment internet came to town, and these attempts at censorship are just pathetic, and send the wrong message.

One might expect to find some understanding of a human mind in the manifesto - however right or wrong that mind is.

And, you might expect to see, and to learn, just how horrible a massacre is, from the video. Some people might learn compassion for the victims. Others might learn to hate the perp. We do have a problem with the media, in that they sanitize everything, interpret it for us, and tell us what to think. Some thinking people might draw different conclusions than some suited penis wrinkle sitting in an office has told us to draw.

Compassion? Are you serious? Centuries worth of murder and slavery by muslims is in no way balanced by this act.

Historian K. S. Lal in his book Theory and Practice of Muslim State in India claims that between the years 1000 AD and 1500 AD, the population of the Indian subcontinent decreased from 200 to 170 million. In Growth of Muslim Population in Medieval India meanwhile he claimed that it fell from 200 million to 120 million by establishment of the Mughal empire because of killings, deportations, dissemination, wars, and famines. He stated that his estimates were tentative and did not claim any finality. Will Durant calls the Muslim conquest of India "probably the bloodiest story in history". During this period, Buddhism declined rapidly while Hinduism faced military-led and Sultanates-sponsored religious violence.

The Copyright, I think, belongs to whoever shot the "tape." Who was the same one that shot the people. Find the videographer and you find the killer, right? We have to go see Peter Jackson and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. The top New Zealand movie -- or video people. We have to talk to them about, what's really going on in this "tape."

And, something interesting. So many folks go to see our very violent movies, play our violent Video Games. And that makes them go out and kill, kill kill. Great for economy. Condolences to N.Z. & the survivors!
