Christchurch shootings at two mosques leave 49 dead, Australian arrested in relation to terror attack

At least one gunman with a semi-automatic weapon attacked worshippers gathering for Friday prayers in two locations: a mosque at Deans Avenue in central Christchurch and another mosque in the nearby suburb of Linwood.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed one of the people taken into custody was an Australian-born citizen.

The ABC has identified Grafton man Brenton Tarrant as the man visible in livestreamed footage of the attack.
...
Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found on a nearby vehicle, but defence force officers disarmed one and are still working on disarming the second.

El Grauniad - Rightwing extremist wrote manifesto before livestreaming Christchurch shooting

The man who livestreamed himself attacking a Christchurch mosque and murdering at least 40 people identified himself online before the rampage as Australian citizen Brenton Tarrant.

On a now-deleted Twitter account, Tarrant posted multiple photos of what appear to be machine gun magazines and a link to what is being described as a manifesto for his actions.

The 74-page document starts off quoting a Dylan Thomas poem, Do not go gentle into that good night, and then moves onto a rant about white genocide.

Tarrant outlines his motivations: including to “create an atmosphere of fear” and to “incite violence” against Muslims while offering up autobiographical details.

What I found very interesting is that NZ police is asking the footage of the attack not to be shared online:

Police are aware there is extremely distressing footage relating to the incident in Christchurch circulating online ... We would strongly urge that the link not be shared. We are working to have any footage removed.

According to some other stuff i read (WaPo?) NZ police is also warning that sharing this footage may be illegal. Even the manifesto, which looorg suspects won't be up forever, is probably going to suffer a similar fate.

I have a message for NZ police, when it comes to this narrow issue: fuck you. You don't want disturbing footage to be "shared" via social media? Then make a goddamn web library of disturbing footage on your own servers, at taxpayer's expense, and let us (the public) share unoffensive links to that library. Actually, if people knew you and/or some journalist outlet are hosting this stuff, they wouldn't be sharing jack in the first place. They are resorting to the social media because the rest of the media is blacking it out. I don't believe we can have an honest and informed discussion about white nazi terrorism when sharing documentary footage is against the law. I understand all that monkey see monkey do reasoning, but I am not buying it. This ship has sailed the moment internet came to town, and these attempts at censorship are just pathetic, and send the wrong message.

Personal question, just from curiosity: what do you expect you'll find of value in the footage/manifesto?

One might expect to find some understanding of a human mind in the manifesto - however right or wrong that mind is.

And, you might expect to see, and to learn, just how horrible a massacre is, from the video. Some people might learn compassion for the victims. Others might learn to hate the perp. We do have a problem with the media, in that they sanitize everything, interpret it for us, and tell us what to think. Some thinking people might draw different conclusions than some suited penis wrinkle sitting in an office has told us to draw.

Compassion? Are you serious? Centuries worth of murder and slavery by muslims is in no way balanced by this act.

Historian K. S. Lal in his book Theory and Practice of Muslim State in India claims that between the years 1000 AD and 1500 AD, the population of the Indian subcontinent decreased from 200 to 170 million. In Growth of Muslim Population in Medieval India meanwhile he claimed that it fell from 200 million to 120 million by establishment of the Mughal empire because of killings, deportations, dissemination, wars, and famines. He stated that his estimates were tentative and did not claim any finality. Will Durant calls the Muslim conquest of India "probably the bloodiest story in history". During this period, Buddhism declined rapidly while Hinduism faced military-led and Sultanates-sponsored religious violence.

It's important for the historical record. Nothing good had ever come out of suppressing history, just look at the historical record. Ah, of course if history has been suppressed, you wouldn't have known that.

History is usually written by the winners. In some rare cases the losers get to have their say and survive to pass it down to the next generation.
The Nazi were famous for trying to destroy history with book burning. Muslims have done the same. You win, you get to describe what happened. Those who come after will just have to take your word for it.

Personal answer: I have no idea, I have no plans to watch this one. But if I ever wanted to understand this particular incident in depth, then I would probably want to watch the actual footage first, don't you think??? And I definitely want this footage to be available to journalists, researchers, and members of general public who are concerned with this particular incident, as well as the larger context in which it is happening, be it white supremacy, religious wars, or what have you.

The Copyright, I think, belongs to whoever shot the "tape." Who was the same one that shot the people. Find the videographer and you find the killer, right? We have to go see Peter Jackson and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. The top New Zealand movie -- or video people. We have to talk to them about, what's really going on in this "tape."

And, something interesting. So many folks go to see our very violent movies, play our violent Video Games. And that makes them go out and kill, kill kill. But somebody went out and killed -- a lot. Made this amazing "tape." And maybe the New Zealand "tape" will bring people back to our movie theaters. So hopefully some good will come out of it. Great for economy. Condolences to N.Z. & the survivors!
