Herpes viruses reactivate in more than half of crew aboard Space Shuttle and International Space Station missions, according to NASA research published in Frontiers in Microbiology. While only a small proportion develop symptoms, virus reactivation rates increase with spaceflight duration and could present a significant health risk on missions to Mars and beyond.

[...] "NASA astronauts endure weeks or even months exposed to microgravity and cosmic radiation—not to mention the extreme G forces of take-off and re-entry," says senior author Dr. Satish K. Mehta of KBR Wyle at the Johnson Space Center. "This physical challenge is compounded by more familiar stressors like social separation, confinement and an altered sleep-wake cycle."

[...] "During spaceflight there is a rise in secretion of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which are known to suppress the immune system. In keeping with this, we find that astronaut's immune cells—particularly those that normally suppress and eliminate viruses—become less effective during spaceflight and sometimes for up to 60 days after."

The Herpes virus group, known medically as "HSV" (Herpes Simplex Virus) contains eight variants. Almost everyone knows about HSV-2, genital Herpes, as it gets the most press. But the more common HSV infection is HSV-1, which causes cold sores. That is right, if you've ever had a cold sore you probably have Herpes. And once infected that is it, the virus remains in your body for the rest of your life.

The virus can be transmitted by casual contact, shaking hands, drinking from the same glass, the relative who would kiss you on the cheek when they came to visit, etc. So odds are you got it as a child and possibly don't even remember the initial outbreak.

Also a person can transmit the virus to another even when they themselves have no symptoms.

You can go your whole life being infected but never have any kind of outbreak or noticeable symptoms, and even if you are infected unless the virus becomes active you would not infect anyone else.

Oh, and chicken pox is also a variant.

Well over half the Earth's population has at least one of the variants.

The HSV blood test will detect the antibodies against the virus, though it can sometimes be thrown off if you've had chicken pox or a small pox vaccination.

Quit trying to normalize the disgusting STDs you have.

Decent people from decent families rarely get HSV-1 or HSV-2. Yeah, you could get raped or something like that, which is horrifying so we made it illegal.

Chicken pox is more trouble, and it is technically herpes, but that isn't usually what people mean and you know it.

Good Sir, I will have you know that there is nothing normal about my STDs.

You seem to be missing the point, that "decency" has nothing to do with it. You can try to avoid it but it will require germophobe levels of obsessive behavior. Don't touch anything in public places. Never eat out. And obviously no space travel.

      Good luck with that.

Eating out is to be avoided. If you must do so, choose a place that uses factory-wrapped disposable utensils. Order food that is served completely hot, all the way through. (so not a hot sandwich with cold lettuce and bread)

If you must eat with your hands, scrub them well and then don't touch anything other than the food. This means you don't touch a faucet handle, door, chair, cup handled by a worker, table, etc. If this is annoying, don't eat with your hands.

It's a small price to pay for avoiding horrible disease.

Thankfully, as a kissless virgin in mom's basement, I don't have that problem.

Seriously though, I don't think I've ever gotten gold sores. I actually had to look up what it is. It probably helps that I don't casually feel up other people and likewise avoid being on the receiving end. I swear, some people's purpose in life is to spread infectious diseases with how much "casual" contact they engage in.
