From the insides of Business Insider

As a huge fire took hold of Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral on Monday evening, alt-right figures were in no time spreading rumours and disinformation on social media linking the blaze to Muslims and hinting at a sinister cover up.

French officials on Monday night were quick to say that arson was unlikely to be the cause of the blaze as it engulfed the roof of the 12th century cathedral, but far-right activists and propagandists were already all over social media channels pushing conspiracies.

Conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec compared the blaze to 9/11, despite no link having made to terrorism by French officials, while alt-right activist Faith Goldy falsely claimed that three days previously "a Muslim jihadis [sic] in Paris was arrested for planning a terrorist attack at Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Funny, there was this little AC scurrying about here on SN yesterday, saying things like this.

...but well countered here, also by an AC:

Police have begun questioning workers who were carrying out renovations at the cathedral. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an inquiry into "involuntary destruction by fire", indicating they believe the cause of the blaze was accidental rather than criminal.

The Paris prosecutor's office said it was treating the fire as an accident, ruling out arson and possible terror-related motives, at least for now.

Does it offend your tribalist worldview? How very small.

Not in the slightest, but it does worry my world view knowing that more and more people are radicalizing towards the far right. Upon re-reading your post I had realized that my reply was a bit knee-jerk reactionary, but you have definitely been shifting over the years from "liberal who got disillusioned by DNC politics" to a mildly alt-right cheerleader.

I went independent a long time ago and voted 3rd party in 2016, but if it helps your sensibilities to assume such then how can I stop you? My commentary on your behavior is based on your posts over time. Honestly I think it is also pretty likely you're just a shell account to push a divisive agenda.

THANK YOU! I am so glad I'm not the only one who's noticed this! A disturbing number of our posters have been slowly but steadily catching this disease, and it's happening slow enough that pointing it out to them only elicits denial, because they don't notice any changes.

I think it is a Venn diagram problem where people who care about freedom overlap with people who care about freedom only because they have shitty worldviews and feel persecuted. There is a very real problem with human psychology where if you inundate people with a specific set of ideas / information then they internalize it to varying degrees. Add in P666's supposed persecution by the Clintons and you have a good recipe for radicalization. Seems a little too convenient for my tastes but whatever.

I wonder if we're messing up a good honey pot, or even better we're hopefully messing up an alt-right recruiting effort :D

Dear Goddess, I hope so. The way to fight this kind of bullshit is Bayesian poisoning, and it's something I've gotten rather good at out of necessity over the last few years. You know we're surrounded by sludge when cleaning up the area around you translates into "poisoning" it, from the evildoers' perspective...

In a way it's like Sanders going on Fox. Sunlight is the second-best disinfectant, right after fire, but seeing as I'm not allowed to actually light these pieces of shit up, exposing them is the next best thing.
