As a huge fire took hold of Paris' Notre-Dame Cathedral on Monday evening, alt-right figures were in no time spreading rumours and disinformation on social media linking the blaze to Muslims and hinting at a sinister cover up.

French officials on Monday night were quick to say that arson was unlikely to be the cause of the blaze as it engulfed the roof of the 12th century cathedral, but far-right activists and propagandists were already all over social media channels pushing conspiracies.

Conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec compared the blaze to 9/11, despite no link having made to terrorism by French officials, while alt-right activist Faith Goldy falsely claimed that three days previously "a Muslim jihadis [sic] in Paris was arrested for planning a terrorist attack at Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Police have begun questioning workers who were carrying out renovations at the cathedral. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an inquiry into "involuntary destruction by fire", indicating they believe the cause of the blaze was accidental rather than criminal.

The Paris prosecutor's office said it was treating the fire as an accident, ruling out arson and possible terror-related motives, at least for now.

    There is such a thing as "hate speech" and you are free to ignore that at your own peril. Actually please do, might be a good lesson in reality.

    You obviously missed the point, like 9/11 if right wing terrorists make enough of a stink we just might get the free speech version of the Patriot Act. There is plenty of unconstitutional shit going on in the US, don't presume the 1st amendment is somehow safe. Trump already went after the 2nd amendment:

    “I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence. “Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

    A short slide from there and you have an easy excuse to confiscate anyone's guns. Post a violent meme? Make a wisecrack about school shootings? Or just make a vague negative post about a minority? Take their guns before they murder people!!!

    But critical thinking is just for chumps right? No way your regressive stupidity can bite you in the ass!

    HA! Can't believe it didn't spring to mind in the above post, Trump has gone after Free Speech as well. He attacks journalists all the time and said

    "Why Isn't the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!"

    We all hate fake news clickbait bullshit, but don't let that distract you from Trump's attack on freedom. That is what you get with your "God Emperor" you fuckwits.
