Venezuela Crisis Live Updates: Clashes Erupt After Opposition Leader Calls for Uprising

• Clashes between anti-government protesters and law enforcement officers erupted in Caracas on Tuesday after the Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, appeared alongside soldiers at a military base and called for the population to rise up against the president, Nicolás Maduro.

• Mr. Guaidó has urged the Venezuela military to join his side since he declared himself interim president more than three months ago. But it was a new step for him to make the declaration with men in uniform by his side. Still, it is unclear how much of the military supports him.

• The Trump administration, which has backed Mr. Guaidó since he first declared himself interim president in January, expressed immediate support for his latest move. President Trump tweeted, "The United States stands with the People of Venezuela and their Freedom!"

• Video and photos showed at least one instance where an armored vehicle rammed protesters. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured.

So, the people of Venezuela have to pick between an increasingly panicked and authoritarian left (but I repeat myself) and a Guaido' whose only legitimacy comes from a rule in Venezuelan law that says the president of the assembly gets in charge in case of trouble, acclamated by an ideologically opposite foreign power? Poor guys.

AC wanted to know what Bot's spin cycle looked like. I remembered Kabal and Kung Lao have moves that make the opponent spin at several thousand RPM. These, if you are not aware, are not actual people. So yes, that was a joke from the beginning. Why is it you authoritarian types don't actually have a sense of humor? That's the one commonality I notice about all of you: you're basically permanently constipated.

Why is it you authoritarian types don't actually have a sense of humor?

To answer your question, for authoritarians, humor is merely another tool for expressing one's group identity. Further, everything runs through the authoritarian filter. Normal humor, since it doesn't express the right things then becomes a threat to the worldview and is marginalized. All that makes them quite unfunny to everyone else who hasn't bought into the package.

What I find interesting here is how it is my fault that your sense of humor involves razor wire and blindly accusing others of being authoritarian types. It's almost like you ran out of credible things to say and only then, desperately clung to humor to continue the assault.

Nobody accused Venezuela of being non-left until the shit hit the fan. Our own most prominent Socialist, Bernie Sanders, was praising Venezuela on August 5th, 2011. (last paragraph at http://archive.is/gsqr7) [archive.is] and just 11 days ago (see https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/on-venezuela-bernie-sanders-proves-socialisms-choking-immorality [washingtonexaminer.com] for that) refused to call for Nicolas Maduro to step down.

It is authoritarian to ban guns. This was done by the National Socialists, by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and by Venezuela. Socialists all around the world, including here in the USA, want to ban guns. This stops opposition. It's hard to fight for your freedom when you have weak weapons.

Socialists of all kinds, from watered-down democrats to full extremist commies, start off with nice-sounding promises. At first, only a few productive people (particularly business owners) are hurt. In the end the socialists run out of other people's money, discover that humans won't work for free, and have to turn extremely violent.

It is fundamentally authoritarian to proclaim severe limitations on the free exchange of ideas and goods. Price floors, price ceilings, control of media, control of education, control of medicine, and so many other parts of socialist systems are very obviously authoritarian.

Authoritarianism isn't the province of the right or left exclusively. And if you think a bunch of people calling themselves "socialist" actually makes them that, well, I give you the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea. You're really reaching, and still failing to grasp.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was authoritarian right. Francisco Franco Bahamonde was authoritarian right.

That's about it. Dozens upon dozens of famous dictators have all been leftist. As they teach medical students: when you hear hooves, think horses, not zebras. Practically speaking, the authoritarian right does not exist. It's a fantasy of the leftist mind. The non-authoritarian left is also pretty exotic, and I can't even come up with an example for that one. It may be impossible, probably because "from each according to his ability" only comes from the barrel of a gun.

"Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea" is a fine reminder that "Peoples'" signifies negation. Normally we should believe one claiming to be socialist. In every case I'm aware of, they are either socialist or communist.

Sounds to me like "authoritarian right" is just poorly organized then, LOL.

But no, seriously: don't conflate the economic left-right axis with the social left-right axis. They're orthogonal to one another, and for very good reason. Social authoritarians can work in either economic extreme, because both extremes are impossible to live sanely under.

No, Hallow, I've said for a long time that authoritarianism can fall anywhere along the economic left/right axis. You, of course, have selective vision and a poor memory.

No True Socialist (TM) is also a strawman. Some socialists would, and their placement on the on authoritarian/freedom axis doesn't change their placement on the economic left/economic right axis. So some true socialists do, some don't, some true capitalists do, and some don't.
