Lenovo Readies New ThinkBook Family of Laptops
Lenovo is gearing up to launch a new series of notebooks aimed at mainstream users. The new ThinkBook laptops were recently showcased at a trade show in China and are currently listed by at least two European retailers. Meanwhile, based on model numbers, it looks like that when they launch in the coming weeks, the new ThinkBooks will succeed certain IdeaPad models within Lenovo's laptop product stack.
[...] The flagship Lenovo ThinkBook S models are based on Intel’s Core i7-8565U (Whiskey Lake) processors and are paired with 16 GB of RAM as well as a 512 GB M.2 NVMe SSD. Select models will also come with a discrete AMD Radeon 540X GPU, but expect this one to be available only inside premium SKUs. In fact, based on Lenovo’s usual approach, expect to see the Lenovo to release the ThinkBook S in a wide variety of configurations in order to cover several market segments.
Both demonstrated ThinkBook S models will also be outfitted with Lenovo’s Accutype keyboard, a rather large touchpad, a 720p webcam with IR sensors for Windows Hello, stereo speakers with Harman badge, a microphone array, three USB Type-A ports, a USB Type-C port, an HDMI output, and a 3.5-mm audio jack for headsets. As for dimensions and weight, the 13.3 and 14.1-inch machines feature 15.9 and 16.5-mm z-heights and weigh 1.34 and 1.5 kilograms respectively.

A while back a Lenovo product engineering wanted to make a 25yeats anniversary edition of the old thinkpads with a proper keyboard and everything...
They silenced him and released the Retro ThinkPad instead.
Trash specs. Overpriced. Everyone hated it.
It was the closest Lenovo got to releasing a decent laptop in a decade.

I remember commenting on the twitter thread, even suggesting names and sizes for the things, pining for the old keyboard and 16:10 or 3:2 screens. The 25th Anniversary Edition was a T470 with the old keyboard shoehorned in; it was insulting as hell. I love thinkpads and have been getting used ones for cheap since the mid 2000s (had a giant spaceheater of a T30 for a while in college, a modded T440s now), but I'm under no illusions about how the company works...

You know, I keep expecting some product designer would post a hackaday story on how they picked up a reasonably speced thinkpad and 3D printed a new case with low profile Cherry MX caps: https://www.cherrymx.de/en/mx-low-profile/mx-low-profile-red.html [cherrymx.de]
You already have similar stuff in "gaming" laptops... Seems more reasonable than trying to score old used models and cramming new parts into them.

Yeah, it seems to be the same way all the manufacturers are going. As long as it's thin and flashy and shiny, to hell with durability and power users. Apple managed to make built-in obsolescence trendy and desirable! I wonder how many more decades we'll have to wait for things to come full circle and whether any kind of free market or high tech manufacturing will even exist by then.
