Phys.org:

If you're a student looking for the most advanced learning machine available, give laptops a pass—and pick up an age-old notebook.

You'll absorb and retain more information if you take notes by hand, according to a study by UCLA, giving you an edge on your tests.

That spiral-bound stack of paper has other advantages, too: You can't zone out on Facebook and Instagram during a lecture, so you are more likely to stay focused.

Putting pen to paper requires a different kind of mental processing than typing does. Sure, typing on a laptop gives you the power to record a lecture nearly word for word—but transcribing verbatim is associated with what's called "shallow cognitive processing." The words may be captured on your screen, but they basically went in one ear and out the other.

Also, your notebook doesn't run Fortnite.

Back in the late 80's when Apple was a great company, Steve Jobs said that the competition for the Macintosh wasn't the PC or Windows. But was this . . .

    . . . then he held up a pencil.

    Today:

My Pixelbook has a touch screen, works with a stylus. Can run Android apps and Chrome OS apps. There are a pitiful few apps that work with a stylus. Mostly to make drawings, paintings. And one that is a calculator that lets you write down your problem.

Mostly, I use the keyboard, trackpad, and touch screen. And I be careful not to say "hey google" because the Pixelbook has google assistant always listening whenever the laptop is opened, even if I have Linux XFCE on Crouton in front.

I've seen some of those modern programs and they're brilliant. I haven't owned one myself, but they have piqued my interest. I'm sure they'll be nearly as good as pen and paper before too long. And in some contexts they're probably better.

The magic here is the actual physical writing, not so much the medium
